Local Employment Declines for 7th Consecutive Month, 2,481 Jobs Lost in May

The latest employment data shows that the number of people employed in Leon County has declined for the 7th month in a row and has reached a 21-month low. Not since August 2013, has the number of people employed in Leon County been below 140,000. The May 2015 number stands at 139,550.

The losses began in November, 2014 when employment fell by 1,327 jobs. This loss was followed by job losses of 553 in December, 408 in January, 253 in February, 732 in March, 689 in April and now 2,481 in May.

In October employment stood at 145,964. Since that time, Leon County employment has fallen to 139,550 for a loss of 6,443 jobs.

During May, employment in Florida grew by 42,000 with gains reported in the North Florida counties of Escambia, Santa Rosa, Okaloosa and Bay.

The job losses in Leon County in May was not unexpected, however, the trend since October 2014 is going against national, state and regional trends.
