Ex-Mayor Alvin Brown Tees Up Challenge to Lawson

Former Jacksonville Mayor Alvin Brown qualified Wednesday in his bid to unseat U.S. Rep. Al Lawson in a North Florida congressional race.

Brown, 56, a Democrat who served from 2011 to 2015 as Jacksonville’s first African-American mayor, has already been campaigning aggressively against Lawson, a Tallahassee Democrat, for the Congressional District 5 seat. Brown slammed Lawson in a television ad, accusing the incumbent of being President Donald Trump’s “favorite Democrat,” after Lawson was seen applauding the president’s State of the Union speech.

US Congressional District 5 runs from Jacksonville to Tallahassee.

Lawson, 69, who served nearly three decades in the Florida Legislature, won the seat in 2016 after beating longtime incumbent Democrat Corrine Brown, who was facing a criminal investigation that led to her eventual conviction on corruption charges.

Federal candidates have until noon Friday to qualify to run for Florida’s 27 congressional seats and one U.S. Senate seat.

  1. Looking at the map, seems all that redistricting work the legislature did a couple years ago was a waste of time. That’s the craziest bunch of lines I’ve ever seen. Clearly drawn to give minorities an advantage. THIS is what gerrymandering looks like.

  2. I hope we get treated to a really entertaining back and forth whizzing contest between these two to determine just which one is the bigger raicest as they battle for the mindless lefty liberal lock-step Democrat voter!!!
Hey Hey Hey if we are lucky it may degenerate into a spirited back and forth of Yo Mama insults!!!

    1. Actually, if you track his voting record…Rep. Lawson has broken from the rank and file Dems on a few occasions. Imagine being criticized for civility. Al is pro veteran and is reasonable. I do not agree with many positions, but he is willing to try and work across the aisle. That has to count for something.

      1. Yes Sir I agree Lawson is a pretty decent guy for being on the George Soros team.
That being said I got a feeling that if Mayor Alvin and Rep. Al are forced to leave civil discorse by the wayside and feel the need to engage in the special form of mud slinging that will play to their voter base – we better buckle up and get ready for one of the most entertaining political side shows ever!!!
Well yo mama’s so [fill in the blank] the Easter bunny had to [fill in the blank].
Yes Sir this has the potential to get very entertaining!!!
