A “kill switch” is a safety device placed on an engine or motor designed to prevent unattended operation. The correct term for what is being discussed is “mute button” or sometimes, “cough switch.”

Serving as an elected official is frustrating, aggravating, maddening and, yes, potentially embarrassing. It often means working long hours with difficult, uninformed, misinformed, rude and offensive people. Some officials rise to the difficulties and make certain the interests of their constituents are paramount. Some don’t. They fight rather than negotiate, argue rather than compromise, accuse rather than resolve. Any informed person who runs for public office knows this. They run with the full knowledge that they will, on occasion, be dealing with citizens who are difficult and offensive.
Mr. Jackson is often the diplomatic equivalent of a thrown brick but some members of the city commission are no better. They respond to a thrown brick by throwing bricks. They have become Mr. Jackson’s promotional team.
I expect the bickering will end as the participants respond to the increasing public concern.
However, the use of a “kill switch” to silence opponents and accusers, civil or not, is an extreme overreach by the commission that runs counter to public discourse. Let every citizen speak, then cut them off only after their allotted time has expired. Duck the bricks, just don’t throw back. That’s what we elected you for.

This behavior wont change so long as everyone keeps voting in the same people. This year, stop voting for incumbents.

Maddox and Marks have “personal” grudges against Jackson and abuse their positions to silence the messenger. Their directing staff to install a “kill switch” is simply more evidence of what Mr. Jackson is saying;that they are misusing their positions and staff for personal gain and cover-ups, then having the audacity to silence anyone who questions their unethical to criminal behavior.

Keep up the good work Tallahassee Reports and Mr. Jackson!

The very idea that the mayor can arbitrarily silence a citizen and then unlawfully direct a city police officer to enforce his position is deeply offensive. Furthermore, it is, arguably, an unethical use of his official position for a personal benefit.

Remember: According to the article in the Democrat each of the Commissioners voted for this, not just Marks and Maddox. Hold them all accountable for this attempt to curtail the influence of our citizens and, ultimately, to silence them.

I’m also curious as to how the Mayor can direct the police to take any action. Shouldn’t that come from the Manager?
