I hope the people of Mexico Beach can recover and rebuild the small beachside town they loved so much. But I can imagine it’s very, very hard not to take a large amount of cash a developer is offering you, especially when you no longer have a house, a car, or a job. Hopefully the FL Legislature and/or the federal government can step in with long-term assistance, cash infusions, and tax breaks to assist in the rebuilding process. Still, I’d find it hard to look down on someone who’s at the end of their financial rope with no hope on the horizon, who finally breaks down and takes the money. Not saying it’s a good thing, just being realistic about desperate people who are in an awful situation. If I and my family were in that situation, I wouldn’t want someone to criticize my choice of methods to escape it.

Hearing chatter that the Legislature “may” call a Special Seasion to address hurricane recovery. Rather than wait until Session in March.

Just curious,
With the new rule on beach front property being considered private, are the landowners responsible for rebuilding beaches in front of private homes or are the taxpayers on the hook for rebuilding private property only to have landowners block sections of beaches off and deem it private? I believe all beaches that are rebuilt with taxpayer money should be considered public property. Just my 2 cent.

Having just passed the milestone of 63 years, I can bring to mind great memories of Mexico Beach. I learned how to walk, as I’m told, when my family was on vacation in a little house on 22nd street. Of course I don’t remember that but pictures of that event make it real to me. I brought my own two girls to Mexico Beach as many times as we could afford. The memories we made there always make me smile. Playing on that awesome white sand, fishing, riding scooters, eating fresh seafood from the Shell Shack, eating Beach Pizza, laughing with the folks at Gulf Foods while stocking up, delicious food at many fantastic spots, day charters with my long time friend Chip, and great homes to rent on the beach all meshed together to create the perfect family vacation getaway. I know that the heart and soul of that place lived in it’s residents. Most of them were like me with average incomes an are finding themselves in a tough situation with very hard decisions. To them I say that I truly believe that as you fight for your homes and businesses God will continue to provide financial means, encouragement, hope and an abundance of friends to help you get back the parts of home that made Mexico Beach special. I’m praying for the people of Mayberry on the Gulf.
