And since we’re on the discussion of Economic Development–We now have a planning department that accepts comp plan amendments only 1 time a year. If you want to develop a piece of property in Leon County that requires a land use change the application period must be made in September prior to the start of a new year. Not to mention that you will be facing immense criticism from residents who will scream that their neighborhood is going to be destroyed. So we get a policy that restricts opportunities for growth and doesn’t make sense for economic development? Hell, we can’t even build a road without people screaming, but we’ll turn our heads when CRA funding (appropriated from Federal Dollars) is directed into Mid Town or local Hotels.

The topic presented here perplexes me. “Local Patriotism: The Goliath of national dysfunction vs. The David of local community” implies we have it right locally, and suggest we miss on a national level. Our national dysfunction is synonymous with local dysfunction. Que the “you can only file a comp plan amendment once a year theory”. Our inability to foster growth in our very own back yard is killing the future of generations for young people right here in Leon County. Why is it our college graduates are leaving this community thousands at the time for better employment opportunities? But wait, we’ve funded economic development $120 million to City/ $120 million to County (excuse me while I stop and laugh here). And yet we are light years behind other cities for jobs, growth and development, i.e. Greenville, S.C., etc.? Is it because we refuse to stand up and fight against the idiotic policies and people standing in the way of growth and development? Ah yes, let’s point the finger at Donald Trump. Lowest unemployment ever, highest stock market ever, securing our borders, and bringing back American manufacturing. That doesn’t seem like national dysfunction to me. Perhaps Leon County should figure out a way where the only development and growth isn’t just State Government with track housing and chain restaurants? Here’s a good idea: let’s meet at St. John’s and complain about Donald Trump and the Federal Government? Give me a break!!!
