PLEASE follow this article up with another stating how much these pins cost, if wearing them was mandatory, and who (taxpayers?) paid for them.
Combined with the spike in property taxes, allegedly to pay for more cops/cop stuff, this makes me ill.
What if TPD shows up at a domestic fight involving a gay teen and their straight parent? Wouldn’t that send a message to the parent that the cops will automatically side with the teen?
Looking forward to December, when TPD can wear crosses to celebrate the birth of Jesus…oh wait, that’s probably against the law…

Rosemary, I haven’t treated anyone in the pride community unkindly or disrespectfully. I have not mocked them even though some of them have mocked me and my religious beliefs.

Your comment has not addressed any of my objections to police officers wearing political pride pins. You did say you think police officers are wearing pins as a reminder to treat people fairly. But, according to the article, the TPD said on Facebook, they are wearing them to celebrate a diverse community and honor their employees. I’m pointing out, they are celebrating just one particular group in the community and honoring only employees who are not heterosexual for the fact that they are not heterosexual. I think that is wrong and that does not make me unkind or disrespectful.

Little Flower, being religious doesn’t have to (arguably shouldn’t if following any of the edicts of religious faith and scripture that I know of) mean we need to treat those who understand God or scriptural teachings or simply act on them differently than we do unkindly. I wear a multi-colored flag to church from time to time because I want anyone who is struggling with same sex attraction and anyone who loves someone who is LGBTQ+to know in any place of worship I’m in that I know that they are as much a child of God as I am and deserve to be treated as such always. I’d wager that the pins are intended to remind officers and declare publicly that law enforcement acknowledges them and will treat them with the same care and respect as they do all citizens.

Were I a TPD officer, I believe I would quietly just “accidentally” pin that rainbow badge upside down is a way to quietly protest. Or maybe “accidentally” pin it loosely and “possibly” lose it. I wonder, as a citizen, who paid for the pins?

Adding to Edward’s comment, I don’t think it’s right that heterosexual police officers must wear a pin all month honoring their co-workers for not being heterosexual. Maybe that could be addressed in their employment contract.

Also, police officers have freedom of religion. They should not be forced to wear pins that support something that is against their religious beliefs.

I wonder if they would wear a “Hetero Pride” pin, or a “Straight Pride” pin… how about a “Biological Male/Female Pride” pin?… or a “Family Pride” pin, or “Combustion Engine Pride” pin?… or a “GOD PRIDE” pin…

Something tells me that none of those would be allowed, thus supporting Little Flower’s train of thought.

Jack, yes, you have armed government employees, with arrest authority, wearing political pins in support of a particular group in the community. Where does that leave the citizens who are not part of that group or who are not politically supportive of that group?
