What? Aren’t these people STUDENTS first and athletes second? Growing up, academics was always stressed over sports.
Sure, I was on the swim team in high school, but I joined because I wanted to, not to make money. My first job was at 14 years old and I made something like $4.13/hour at Publix working as a bag boy. Rode my bike to and from work, graduated with a 3.4 GPA from high school, then got accepted and graduated from Stetson.
School, work, family, and faith, not necessarily in that order, are my priorities.
Less than 5% of the U.S. population makes it into the pros anyway. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket!

Didn’t shoot hoops, but flunked enough I could drive to Middle School. Did well in shop, until I brazed the bell of a flugelhorn onto the muffler of teacher’s Fiat. NASCAR never called – life’s not fair.

It was a huge mistake to do this with college players… and it’s a catastrophic mistake to do this at the High School level.
