On May 4th, the Chiles flag football team (16-2) beat Niceville (16-3) with a final score of 21-7 at Stan Goldstein field in Tallahassee to advance to the regional finals of the FHSAA 3A regional finals.

Chiles High School opened its FHSAA 3A regional semifinal with an early spark, taking a 7-0 lead on a double-pass touchdown to Kaitlyn Fagan with 6:30 left in the first quarter, followed by a successful one-point conversion run by Kendall Sadberry. The defense immediately backed it up with a critical fourth-down stop late in the opening quarter to keep Niceville off the board heading into the second.

Momentum continued in the second quarter when Charlotte Reynolds intercepted a pass for Chiles, setting up another quick score as Sadberry punched in a rushing touchdown to make it 14-0. Niceville responded later in the quarter with a passing touchdown to cut the lead to 14-7, but Chiles regained control right after halftime when Sadberry added another rushing score to push the lead to 21-7. Defensively, Sadberry also came up big with an interception in her own end zone to prevent a Niceville scoring chance, and Chiles sealed the game despite a late fourth-quarter interception, holding on for the 21-7 win and a trip to the state championship.

Stats

Sadberry led the way with 124 passing yards and added two rushing touchdowns, finishing as the central dual-threat option for Chiles. The passing game was spread across multiple targets, with senior Kaitlyn Fagan providing the biggest impact through the air, recording 62 receiving yards and a touchdown. Sophomore Ellis Smeltzer also contributed a passing touchdown, while the offense finished with 194 passing yards and 51 rushing yards, consistently moving the ball and capitalizing in key scoring situations.

Defensively, Chiles controlled the game with pressure and playmaking, holding Niceville to just seven points while forcing two interceptions. Sadberry added a pick on top of her offensive production, and senior Charlotte Reynolds returned an interception for 25 yards to swing momentum. The defense totaled 24 flag pulls and limited explosive plays throughout the game, with multiple players contributing pass breakups and steady containment.

With this win the Timberwolves will face off against the top seeded Ponte Vedra (16-0) in the regional finals looking to give the Sharks their first loss of the season. That game will be held in Ponte Vedra on May 7th.

The lone point for Leon came at the fours, where Jordyn Russell and Kendall Cruse beat Chiles’ Boykin and Rowse in a tightly contested three-set match, 20-22, 21-14, 12-15.

Florida High beat CCS in the final to claim the district title and retain momentum heading into the offseason.

In the first round of the tournament, top-seeded Florida High faced off against fourth-seeded Maclay in what would be their third meeting of the season. The Seminoles last played Maclay during the last match of the regular season, where they swept the Marauders 5-0 without losing a set. Florida High repeated this result in the district tournament, winning all ten sets and advancing to the finals, where they matched up against CCS.

In the first round of the tournament, the second-seeded CCS matched up against third-seeded Franklin County in a tight matchup that came down to the wire. CCS ultimately beat Franklin County with a dual score of 3-2 to advance to the final match against Florida High.

This was the third matchup between Florida High and CCS this season as the Seminoles beat the Chargers 5-0 twice in the regular season.
The next two dual points belonged to the Seminoles as well, as Anna Schoen and Mackenzie Taber beat CCS’s Lyndsey Freeland and Sarah-Kate Liddell in straight sets at the fourth position, while Florida High’s Kennedy Mayernick and Davie Stringer beat Korben Steinmetz and Sydnie Burks in straight sets to win their third dual point to clinch the dual.

Although Florida High had already won the dual, the Seminoles continued to play the remaining matchups. At the second position, Addison Mayernick and Olivia Woods beating Violet McMillan and Kallie Mathison in straight sets claiming their fourth dual point. At the first position, CCS’s Avea Casperson and Sarah Bradley put up a fight against Florida High’s Linnea Whittington and Hunter Cook while being the first pair from CCS to force a third set against the Seminoles. CCS lost the first set but won the second with a score of 21-17 to force Florida High to their first third set match of the tournament. Although CCS fought hard, Whittington and Cook won the third set 15-9, claiming the final point of the dual, winning 5-0.

On Apr. 13 and 14, Chiles hosted the FHSAA 3A District 2 tournament involving six total teams at Tom Brown Park. Chiles won both district titles as a team for boys and girls while Leon finished runner-up in both the boys and girls divisions as well. Other teams in the tournament included Lincoln, Arnold, Columbia, and Mosley.

Boys

Chiles came in first as a team with 20 sets won, Leon came in second with 12, Arnold placed third with eight, Columbia placed fourth with seven and both Lincoln and Mosley tied for fifth without winning a set.

Chiles delivered a complete sweep on the boys side, dominating nearly every match with decisive straight-set victories and rarely allowing opponents into contention. Sophomore Evan Rodenberg set the tone early at No. 1 singles, cruising through his semifinal 6-1, 6-0 before finishing off a dominant run with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Evan Cox (Arnold) in the championship. That momentum carried throughout the lineup, as sophomore Omar Mongerie was nearly untouchable at No. 2 singles, following a flawless 6-0, 6-0 semifinal with a 6-1, 6-2 win over John Taylor (Arnold) to claim the title.

Chiles continued its dominance behind senior Michael Metarko, who rolled through both rounds at No. 3 singles, including a 6-2, 6-0 championship win over Leon’s Jack Winsor, while junior Shawn Sun turned in one of the most dominant performances of the day, not dropping a single game across both matches at No. 4 singles (6-0, 6-0; 6-0, 6-0). At No. 5 singles, senior Wesley Kuntz added another title with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Leon’s Xavier Uchino after a strong semifinal showing.

The dominance extended into doubles, where Metarko and Rodenberg overwhelmed the field at No. 1 doubles, including a 6-0, 6-0 semifinal win and a 6-2, 6-2 win over Leon’s Micah Olimb and Miles Noel in the final. At No. 2 doubles, Kuntz and Sun capped off the sweep, following a 6-0, 6-1 semifinal win with a 6-4, 6-2 championship win over Arnold’s Brandon Todd and Drew Childress. In total, Chiles controlled every flight, completing a clean sweep of titles in one of the most dominant showings of the tournament.

Leon High School battled its way into multiple championship matches, earning key runner-up finishes against a dominant Chiles lineup. At No. 3 singles, senior Jack Winsor advanced to the final after a 6-0, 6-0 win against Arnold’s Brandon Todd finishing second after a 6-2, 6-0 match against Chiles’ Michael Metarko in the finals.

Leon also found success at No. 5 singles, where senior Xavier Uchino reached the championship match after a 6-0, 6-1 win against Arnold’s Josh Moore and secured a runner-up finish after a 6-2, 6-2 result against Chiles’ Wesley Kuntz. In doubles, Leon’s top team of Micah Olimb and Miles Noel advanced to the No. 1 doubles final, where they finished second following a 6-2, 6-2 match against Chiles’ Metarko and Rodenberg.

Despite facing one of the most dominant performances in the tournament, Leon consistently pushed into the final rounds and showed its ability to compete across both singles and doubles play.

Girls

Chiles Came in first as a team with 20 sets won, Leon came in second with 11, Arnold placed third with eight, Mosley placed fourth with six and both Lincoln and Columbia tied for fifth with one set each.

The Chiles girls tennis team put together a dominant all-around performance, sweeping multiple singles and doubles titles while consistently winning in straight sets or clutch tiebreaks. Leading the way, senior Isabella Venclauskas fought through a tough three-set semifinal over Lincoln’s Siri Davidi (6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (10-4)) before taking control in the No. 1 singles final, defeating Leon’s Julia White 6-1, 6-2. That momentum carried throughout the lineup, as junior Jennifer Egan followed a commanding 6-2, 6-0 semifinal with a gritty comeback win in the No. 2 final, rallying past Sophia Novikova (Arnold) 5-7, 6-2, 1-0 (10-4).

Chiles continued to roll behind junior Aubrey Rodriguez, who claimed the No. 3 singles title with back-to-back straight-set wins (6-2, 6-3; 6-3, 6-3), while senior Izzy Cummings delivered one of the most dramatic finishes of the day at No. 4 singles. After dominating her semifinal 6-1, 6-0, Cummings dropped the first set in the final but battled back to defeat Leon’s Sophia Liu 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (13-11). The success carried into doubles, where Venclauskas and Rodriguez capped their run with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Leon’s Josie Phillips and Julia White in the No. 1 final, while Cummings and Egan closed out the tournament in dominant fashion at No. 2 doubles, winning 6-2, 6-0 in the semifinals and 6-1, 6-1 in the championship. Altogether, Chiles controlled the tournament from start to finish with a near sweep of titles.

Leon High School consistently pushed into championship matches, earning several runner-up finishes against a deep Chiles lineup. Senior Julia White led the way, advancing to the No. 1 singles final before finishing second after a 6-1, 6-2 match against Isabella Venclauskas. Leon’s strongest push came at No. 4 singles, where Sophia Liu turned in one of the most competitive performances of the tournament, taking the opening set 6-4 before narrowly falling in a third-set tiebreak, 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (13-11). Leon found success at the No. 5 singles position with Jerusalem Tumauri beating Arnolds Tonyia Johnson 6-0, 6-1 in the semi-final and winning the final match against Chiles by default.

Leon also made its presence felt in doubles, reaching both championship matches. The No. 1 team of Josie Phillips and Julia White battled but fell 6-4, 6-2, while Norah Sommerset and Jerusalem Temuari finished as runners-up at No. 2 doubles after a 6-1, 6-1 final. Despite facing a dominant opponent, Leon repeatedly advanced deep into the bracket and proved its ability to compete at a high level across both singles and doubles play.

Regional playoffs will begin next week.

Below are the Leon County high school beach volleyball rankings based off of stats provided by MaxPreps. A total of 9 Leon County team were included in the rankings with the top three highlighted by team stats. The stats used below were updated by MaxPreps up to Apr. 13.

Chiles
Chiles (12-1) enters the final stretch of the regular season ranked No. 6 in the state of Florida and No. 12 nationally, the highest ranking in Leon County by a wide margin. Chiles has continued their dominant form with four straight 5-0 sweeps, starting April 2 against Mosley and South Walton, followed by a key district win over Leon on April 7 and another sweep of Lincoln on April 8. With two matches still remaining, the team is carrying significant momentum and has firmly established itself as one of the top programs in both the state and the country heading into postseason play. The Timberwolves will finish their regular season off with a home game against Maclay on April 15.

Florida High
Florida High has put together a strong late-season surge, winning its most recent four matches in convincing fashion, including 5-0 sweeps over Sneads on April 2, Wakulla on April 7, and Blountstown. That stretch has helped stabilize a season that included early tests against top competition, including a tough 3-2 loss at Leon on March 3 and another narrow 3-2 setback to Leon on March 26, along with a challenging match against Chiles. Despite those setbacks, the team has consistently rebounded with dominant performances, highlighted by a 5-0 road win at Lincoln on March 10 and a sweep of Wakulla in their earlier meeting on March 11, showing clear growth and depth as the regular season nears its conclusion.

Leon
Leon battled through a competitive late season stretch, splitting results against some of the toughest opponents on its schedule while finishing strong in recent play. Most recently, the Lions earned a 5-0 sweep over Maclay on April 9 after a tough 5-0 loss at Chiles on April 7, showing resilience after facing one of the top programs in the area. Earlier in the season, key matchups included a hard-fought 3-2 win over Florida High on March 26, which highlighted the team’s ability to perform in tight duals, as well as a dominant 5-0 road win at Lincoln on March 11 that helped establish early momentum. Despite setbacks against strong competition like Chiles and Bishop Kenny, the team has consistently responded with strong performances and enters the final stretch showing both growth and depth across the lineup.
