Also, the unemployment rate increased from 4.0% in May to 5.0% in June.

Despite these recent losses, approximately 1,300 more people were working in June of this year when compared to June of last year. The latest report shows that 140,577 people were employed in June, 2016. That is 1,335 more than the 139,242 people employed during June of last year.

Historically, Leon County loses jobs during April through June and rebounds from July to September. However, over the last three years the number of losses during the April-June period has increased each year. In 2014, 1,210 jobs were lost. This was followed by a loss of 2,179 jobs in 2015.

The chart below shows the monthly number of jobs and also a line tracking the three-month average of people employed. The 3-month trend line indicates employment is clearly trending down. The chart also shows the rebound in employment that can be expected from July through September.
