Leon County to Consider Funding Three Additional Family-Oriented Concerts

Next week the Leon County Board of County Commissioners will consider a proposal to provide additional free and family-oriented concerts at the Capital City Amphitheater in Cascades Park.

The proposal would be implemented through an agreement with the Tallahassee Downtown Improvement Authority to extend its Sundown Summer Concert Series through the Fall of 2019.

The fiscal impact is listed as $30,000. Funding would come from the Division of Tourism’s existing budget for concerts at the Capital City Amphitheater.

Supported through sponsorships, the Sundown Summer Concert Series is free to the public and open to all ages with no advance registration or ticketing required.

The agenda item states that ” each year, the Sundown Summer Concert Series has proven to be successful, with a continuous growth in attendees each year. Last year, the DIA reported that the 2018 Sundown Summer Concert Series attracted approximately 2,500-3,000 attendees at each event.”

The County’s sponsorship in the amount of $30,000 would support the extension of the DIA’s free and family-friendly concerts through the fall of 2019. The extension includes three additional concerts to be hosted during non-peak visitor weekends on Saturday, September 14th, Saturday, October 12th, and Saturday, November 9th.

The Leon County BOCC will consider the request on May 14th.

They should consider booking Christian artists and have the churches and WAY-FM do the advertising for them. I am sure churches would be glad to include information about upcoming Christian concerts in their church bulletins. And it would draw people from outside of Tallahassee too, depending on who you bring in.

Just curious if maybe we could somehow piggyback off of the Wild Adventures concert series. Seems like it might be advantageous for acts to play two close venues on consecutive nights.

I will bet that there are quit a few good Garage Bands in Tallahassee and the surrounding area that would love a chance to play at the Capital City Amphitheater in Cascades Park AND, do it for about $1,000 to $1,500 each.

You're right, but they're trying to get more than 2500 people to show up. This comes for tourism money, so they're trying to draw some people from outside of Tallahassee, and is would be hard with "Garage Bands"

This is nice BUT, I will bet it costs Leon County MORE than the $30K they pledged to spend.

While it does give our elected officials a warm fuzzy "hey look at me I'm a do-gooder" kind of feeling...can we just focus on booking entertainment that actually makes money?
