Summer work-outs have ended, classes have begun, varsity teams have been selected and now Leon County high school volleyball coaches are preparing for the fall season with one goal – championships.
The regular season which begins this week, will end in October with district and state playoffs to follow.
Tallahassee Reports is planning on providing coverage of the upcoming season on a weekly basis. The coverage will include game results, district standings, player profiles and more.
But before the 2022-23 season gets started, lets take one more look back at how Leon County high school volleyball fared in 2021-22.
District Titles
Leon County had three 2021-22 district champions. Leon defeated Chiles for the 6A District 3 title, while St. John Paul II was victorious in the 2A District 2 final game and North Florida Christian won the 2A District 1 title.
Leon County just missed having a fourth district championship when Florida State University HS lost a five-set match to Pensacola Catholic in the 3A District 1 final.
Rankings
The table nearby shows the rankings of the 11 Leon County high school volleyball teams for the 21-22 season. The rankings are tabulated by MaxPreps which relies on game results stored in the MaxPreps database.
Generally, the more a team wins, the higher the ranking. However, the system takes into account quality wins (against other highly ranked opponents) and strength of schedule.
For the 11 teams, the table lists the 21-22 record, the Leon County rankings, the state class rankings, the overall state ranking, and the strength of schedule.
Leon County had three teams (Leon, Chiles, & Florida State University HS) ranked in the top 50 of the overall state rankings which included 703 teams.
The state classification rankings, which are based on enrollment population, show that the highest classification in Leon County – 6A – had two schools, Leon(3) & Chiles(5) ranked in the top 5. Lincoln High School was ranked 33.
In the 3A classification, Leon County had two teams – Florida State University HS (13) and Maclay (26) – ranked in the top 30.
The 2A classification was led by St. John Paul II ranked 29th. They were followed by North Florida Christian (41), Florida A&M HS (76), and Community Christian (89).
The 5A classification was led by Rickards (69) and Godby (76).
The 2022-23 Season
Tallahassee Reports will publish the various rankings for the 11 Leon County volleyball teams as MaxPreps updates the results throughout the season.
Also, the Florida High School Athletic Association recently released the volleyball classifications and districts. The assignments are for the next two school years. There were changes that impact Leon County teams. For the 2022-23 season Lincoln High School was moved from 6A to 5A and Godby High School was moved from 5A to 4A.
