On Monday, the Tallahassee Police Department provided an update on three violent crime incidents. Get the details.

On May 14, 2024, the Leon County Commission will consider awarding the bid for the LeRoy Collins Library (Leon County Main Library) second floor improvements projects to OmniCon Corp. in the amount of $1,554,530.

Leon County Schools announced schools are closed today ahead of severe weather this morning that could cause the roads to be impassable and could add to the issues facing many communities already after last week’s storms.

The Capital Area chapter of the American Red Cross has set up a shelter at FAMU’s Al Lawson Jr. Multipurpose Center at 1800 Wahnish Way. The shelter is pet-friendly and open 24/7. People who have been displaced from their homes are welcome to stay at the shelter, where they can receive free water and meals.

LOCAL SPORTS NEWS

The Florida State softball team (43-14) was selected to host its 10th consecutive NCAA Regional as the Seminoles will enter the NCAA Tournament as the No. 15 overall seed. Auburn, UCF and Chattanooga will join the Seminoles in the Tallahassee Regional. The Seminoles will take on Chattanooga at 4:30 p.m. on the ACC Network while Auburn and UCF will face off at 2 p.m. on ESPNU at JoAnne Graf Field.

FLORIDA NEWS

Gov. Ron DeSantis on Monday issued an Executive Order that expands the ongoing State of Emergency to encompass 15 counties in response to the series of tornadoes and inclement storms that swept through North Florida on Friday.

Florida Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson updated department policies on handling the nationwide uptick of Bovine Associated Influenza A Syndrome in cattle. Simpson looked to protect Florida’s food supply in April by initially imposing restrictions on the importation of such cattle. Florida last week said there are still zero cases of the disease in the state’s cattle, and Simpson’s office announced Monday that remains the case.

Republican Congressional candidate Mike Haridopolos signed a pledge expressing support for term limits in Congress. The former Florida Senate President is running in the 8th Congressional District which covers Brevard, Indian River and part of Orange County. Haridopolos kicked off his campaign in April to coincide with incumbent Republican Rep. Bill Posey opting to retire and backing Haridopolos.
