Former Wasserman Schultz Press Secretary Serving as Gillum Campaign Spokesman

Tallahassee Reports has learned that gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum has recruited Geoff Burgan, the former chief spokesman and speechwriter for U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, to serve as the spokesman for his campaign.

Burgan worked with Wasserman Schultz from April 2015 until February 2017. During this time she was the senior Democratic Member on the House Appropriations Committee and the Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chairwoman.

Burgan served as Director of Advance during 2016 Democratic National Convention and was part of the Chairwoman’s communications staff during the Democratic presidential debate in Miami, Fla.

Wasserman Schultz resigned her position with the DNC in July 2016 over the Clinton/Sanders controversy.

In recent responses by Burgan on behalf of Gillum’s campaign, he has been described as a “campaign spokesman.”

On Gillum’s recent email controversy, Burgan told reporters “the mayor followed the law and arguments to the contrary were without merit.”

He added, “the Republicans are so scared of the grassroots campaign Andrew is running that they’re already on the attack.”

It appears Burgan’s national level experience and the list of contacts he would have developed working with Wasserman Shultz during her high profile job with the DNC will be a valuable resource for Gillum.

Before his stint with Wasserman Schultz, Burgan served as Communications Research Manager for then Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley from November 2013 to January 2015.

Burgan graduated from the University of Maryland-College Park  in 2011 with a degree in Journalism, Government & Politics.

  1. Have either Geoff Burgan or Andrew Gillum ever answered a question directly? That was a rhetorical question and here is the answer…..NO! They both look at every question as an opportunity to sidestep, redirect and sling mud on their opposition. I would caution Florida Democratic voters to watch out for this type of rhetoric. If you just can’t bring yourself to switch parties yet, then just stay home rather than voting for the guy who wants to stifle Florida’s small and minority businesses with heavy taxes, take away constitutional rights, and impede the President’s progress.
Gillum: The only “non-millionaire” candidate backed by a whole herd of Socialist Billionaires!

  2. Ask yourself… why would he “choose” someone to be his spokesman, who worked for someone that had to resign in disgrace after getting caught participating in dirty politics?

Would it be that this is the kind of people he’s looking for?

  3. “”He added, “the Republicans are so scared of the grassroots campaign Andrew is running that they’re already on the attack.””

    BBBWWWAHHAHHHAHHAAAHHAAAHAAAHAAAHAAAAA!!!!!

    Hack.

    1. Andrew was set up by Wassermann Schultz to get beat by the republican gubernatorial candidate!. Tim CANOVA will take her out on 11/6/18 and put her on the unemployment line!Andrew you still have time to redeem your self fire that spokesman and come clean!

  4. This campaign is doomed and even without the recent software scandal taken into account. This mayor has to take responsibility for running Tallahassee into the weeds — #1 in crime, infrastructure failures, junkets, asleep at the wheel, etc.

A run for governor at this time will end his political career when his mismanagement is exposed statewide. His lack of experience, dismal track record, low name recognition, and misusing tax dollars for political gain will not get him anywhere. He is in denial and delusional to think he has any chance in this arena. His small Tallahassee following does not translate into the state arena. He will only be expending energy that would be better spent focusing on the job he has now – as mayor – and correcting the mistakes there.

Photo ops with children at local community centers and schools are not enough to base a campaign on.

  5. So the mayor has hired the former flack of a former and disgraced chair of the DNC who was fired for fixing the nomination for her friend Hillary…off to a great start Andy, keep up the good work.

I guess that’s one way to look at it Mr. Burgan
