Looking at daily trends related to COVID-19 in Florida shows that all indicators have been trending down for at least a week. Data released by the Florida Department of Health on August 22 shows:

  • The seven-day average of daily new cases is now at 3,994. This is down from the peak of 11,870 on July 17.
  • The number of current COVID -19 hospitalizations is at 4,752. This is down from the peak 9,508 reported on July 22.
  • The seven-day average of the daily positivity rate is at 7.09%. This is down from a peak of 15.44 % on July 8.
  • The seven-day average of daily reported fatalities is at 133. This average has not been this low since July 29 and is down from 185 reported on August 5th.

The question now is, will these trends continue when k-12 school and higher education institutions begin to open their doors over the next couple of weeks?
