A former owner of a Tallahassee facility that helps children with development delays was acquitted on Medicaid fraud charges in a case that took numerous legal turns over the past few years. Rachel Scharlepp, a former owner of PlayBig Therapy, was found not guilty Nov. 3 at the conclusion of a four-day trial in Leon Circuit Court.
The Florida Supreme Court rules 2-1 in favor of shielding Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare from having to turn over records to a family that claimed their child’s condition resulted from a birth injury or from treatment he received at the hospital. The issue stemmed from a 2004 medical malpractice lawsuit regarding a child with cerebral palsy. The effects of the case could lead to a reopening of a Florida Supreme Court debate over a constitutional amendment forcing hospitals and healthcare providers to disclose records.
Congressman and previous gubernatorial candidate Charlie Crist announced he is donating the rest of his campaign money to 20 different progressive advocacy groups. Some of the groups are focused on gun control legislation, abortion access, gay rights groups, among other policy issues. In total, Crist is donating a total of approximately $531,000 spread equally. Florida campaign finance law requires candidates to dispose all leftover campaign funds within 90 days after an election.
Florida Sen. Rick Scott officially announced he is challenging Mitch McConnell for the post of Senate Minority leader. Scott has already indicated that he is unhappy with the leadership McConnell has been offering and said, “If you simply want to stick with the status quo, don’t vote for me.”
A Florida judge has dismissed a lawsuit against Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis over flying illegal aliens to Martha’s Vineyard on a technical issue. However, Leon Circuit Judge John C. Cooper kept the door open to a further legal fight recommending State Sen. Jason Pizzo and his attorneys, the party who filed the lawsuit, to craft a new complaint clearly spelling out their arguments in a way that will question the constitutionality of the flights.
