Leon County Commission Meeting Briefs: September 12, 2023

Below are the news briefs from the Leon County Commission meeting that took place on September 12, 2023.

The Commission approved all items on the consent agenda including the approval to award the bid for the renovations to the Concord School Building to Arris General Contractors Inc., the lowest responsive bidder in the amount of $4,250,000. The scope of this work incudes, sidewalks, landscaping, door and window replacement, new stairs, handicapped accessible bathrooms and more.

Staff gave the Commission a status report on the County’s preparation response and recovery efforts related to Hurricane Idalia. Staff explained the lessons they learned from previous storms allowed them to be extremely prepared for Idalia, as there was more capacity for shelter than Leon County has ever had before. Additionally, staff noted that if you have anything in your backyard drag it to the curb and it will be gone by next week since FEMA is reimbursing the County for curb-side debris collection.

The Commission voted unanimously to approve the 2023/2024 tentative budget countywide millage rate of 8.3144 mills.

The Commission voted unanimously to approve the Resolution endorsing the Declaration of a Climate Emergency in Leon County. Previously, this issue was presented to the Commission by the Board of youth advocacy organization GenCLEO. Two Members of GenCLEO attended the Commission meeting to give speeches addressing the climate crisis and thanking the Commission and County staff for their cooperation.

The Commission voted unanimously to approve Commissioner David O’Keefe to serve on the Miccosukee Canopy Road Greenway Citizen’s Committee.

The Commission voted unanimously to approve Jamie Rager and Tori Schneider to the Animal Shelter Advisory Board for a three-year term, James Pfeiffer to the Board of Adjustment & Appeals for the remainder of the unexpired term, ratify the Commission on the Status on Women and Girls’ appointment of Wachell McKendrick, Kimberly Berry and Kay Meyer for two-year terms. Lastly, the Commission ratified the appointment of Morgan Danyi-Burton to the Commission of the Status on Women and Girls, for the remainder of the unexpired term.

During the discussion by Commissioners portion of the meeting, Commissioner Christian Caban expressed the struggle Pensacola Street faces caused by crime and made a motion to have an analysis on crime in Leon County compared to other like-size Counties in Florida and specifically dissect the crime in the 32304 zip-code area, and to investigate solutions to combat those crimes. The Board unanimously approved this motion.

  1. I would invite the County Commission and members of GenCLEO to conduct an easy science research project. Knowing the fact that this planet and its atmosphere contain X amount of H2O, Some of that H2O is liquid, some is vapor and some is frozen.
Fill a drinking glass (representing the planet and atmosphere) with ice cubes (even some can rise above the rim). Pour cold water (to reduce immediate ice melt) into the glass to within 1/2 inch of rim. Mark the level of water in the glass and set the glass in a warm room.
After all the ice has melted record how much the water level has risen (representing the world wide rise in sea levels if all the ice in all the glaciers and both polar ice caps were to melt).

  2. Ref “ … County compared to other like-size Counties in Florida and specifically dissect the crime in the 32304 zip-code..”

Watch them compare and adopt big city progressive policies that puts Tallahassee on the path to be the next “Portland” where criminals act with complete immunity. Be honest, fighting crime is not a Commission priority.

  3. The County did a great job when it came to Hurricane Idalia.

WHY are you needing to raise our Property Tax when you have Hundreds of Homes recently built, being built and about to be built that that are priced at $250K and UP? Just wait for those Taxes to roll in.

  4. “The scope of this work includes, sidewalks, landscaping, door and window replacement, new stairs, handicapped accessible bathrooms and more.”

SO, your NOT doing a Renovation but a full blown Retro Build and will lose everything that it once was. Even with that, why will the build cost over $500,000?
