LOCAL NEWS

The City of Tallahassee was recently awarded a grant of more than $11.3 million from the Federal Transit Administration for StarMetro. Funds will be used to purchase eight electric buses, expand essential charging infrastructure and support workforce development programs to maintain the City’s growing electric fleet.

Tallahassee City Commission candidates Jack Porter and Dot Inman-Johnson are proposing $60,000 starting salaries for firefighters, which – if implemented – would result in a major increase in the fire service fund budget and an increase in the fire service fee.

Leon County Government recently announced that “GRAMMY® Award-winning artist, producer, songwriter, entrepreneur, global cultural icon and Tallahassee trailblazer T-Pain” will perform live at the Adderley Amphitheater at Cascades Park on Sunday, November 10, 2024. Tickets go on sale on Friday, July 19, 2024, at noon.

Florida State had four more players selected in the 2024 MLB Draft Monday, with Marco Dinges getting selected in the fourth round at pick 123 by the Milwaukee Brewers and Jaime Ferrer going three picks later at 126 by the Minnesota Twins.

The first Florida political leaders hit the stage in Milwaukee minutes after the Republican National Committee (RNC) officially opened. U.S. Rep. Michael Waltz and state Sen. Joe Gruters, both in party positions, appeared on the to establish the party’s platforms and officially empower delegates to nominate their choice for President.

Conservatives for Principled Leadership, a Tallahassee-based political action committee (PAC) headed by House Speaker Paul Renner, donated $1 million to a committee standing in opposition to a constitutional amendment initiative that would enshrine abortion rights in the Florida Constitution.

Former President Donald Trump on Monday bypassed U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio in making his vice-presidential pick, averting what could have been a major change in Florida’s political landscape.

NATIONAL NEWS

Former President Donald Trump selected Sen. JD Vance (R-OH) as his running mate for the 2024 election yesterday. The announcement came during the first day of the Republican National Convention (see photos) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, just before Trump officially became the party’s presidential nominee. Trump is expected to accept the nomination Thursday.

The attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump could help the FBI accomplish something it has struggled to do for years: repair its poisonous relationship with Washington’s GOP political establishment. It might even curtail the storied law enforcement agency’s role as one of Trump’s favorite punching bags.

US stock markets close higher (S&P 500 +0.3%, Dow +0.5%, Nasdaq +0.4%), with Dow closing at a record high; Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell signals the Fed won’t wait until annual inflation hits 2% before cutting interest rates (More).

  1. Worked at C.K. Steele Bus Terminal in 2020 and saw electric buses owned by FSU in action. Only good for one trip and had to be recharged and that took 20 minutes.
