On Jan. 9, the Maclay Marauders (7-3-1) hosted the Leon Lions (6-4-3) in search of their seventh win of the season at Frank Shaw Field. With the end of the season approaching, both teams are trying to keep their momentum going as Maclay has won their last 4 games and Leon has won 3 out of their last 4. Maclay currently sits third in the Leon County girls Leon County soccer rankings (Maxpreps) and Leon follows closely behind t fourth.
On this cold night it was clear that defense was going to be an important factor for both teams.
In the first half the Marauders front three were having a tough time getting pass the Leon back line and had their most success off of corner kicks and throw-ins. On Maclay’s second attempted corner of the night, taken by Bryce Storey (Sr.), Macy Cureton (So.) found the back of the net with a header to take a 1-0 lead in the first half.
Although down in the second half, the Leon Lions created more chances than in the first half but had a tough time getting the ball passed Maclay Goalie Camille Lillie (So.). However, Leon Forward Emily Lewis (So.) scored her 4th goal of the season with just over 11 minutes left in the final half. After the equalizer from Leon, both teams played shut down defense and the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
