Jobless Claims Dip in Holiday Week

By The News Service of Florida

Florida had an estimated 6,035 first-time unemployment claims during the Fourth of July week, the lowest number since 5,698 claims were recorded during the holiday-shortened Memorial Day week, according to a U.S. Department of Labor report issued Thursday.

The estimated 6,035 claims during the week that ended July 5 were down from a revised count of 7,060 the week during the week that ended June 28. Florida had a 3.7 percent unemployment rate in May, and the state Department of Commerce will release a June figure on July 18. The national unemployment rate was 4.1 percent in June.
