Bills Dealing With DEI, Net Zero Laws, Church Guardians Head to DeSantis’ Desk

By The News Service of Florida

Gov. Ron DeSantis was formally presented with a tranche of bills Tuesday, including measures to ban local governments from imposing diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) policies or net-zero policies.

Another measure allows volunteer armed guards at churches and places of worship to be exempt from acquiring a professional security license.

The DEI bill (SB 1134), sponsored by Sen. Clay Yarborough, R-Jacksonville, also gives Gon. Ron DeSantis the power to remove local officials for violating the proposed changes.

In addition to banning counties and municipalities from funding or passing a resolution in support of DEI programs, local governments would be prohibited from having a DEI office or inclusion officer.

Elected officials found in violation could also face removal from office by the governor.

Another measure now on DeSantis’ desk (HB 1217) bans local governments from using net-zero policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions or directing tax dollars for programs that advance net-zero policies.

Under the church guardian measure (SB 52) any person who volunteers without compensation to be an armed guardian at a place of worship is exempt from needing a Class D or G license from the Division of Licensing within the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

DeSantis has until May 6 to act on the proposals.
