On April 22, Chiles won the FHSAA beach volleyball 2A district 2 tournament with five other teams competing at Tom Brown Park in Tallahassee, FL. The teams included Chiles, Leon, Lincoln, Wakulla, Rickards and Godby. Chiles and Leon ultimately faced off in the district final where the Timberwolves beat the Lions 4-1 claiming the district title.
The Timberwolves opened play with a 5-0 sweep of Wakulla, handling business efficiently across the board. Meg Hearn and Natalie Gibson led off with a dominant 21-7, 21-3 win at the ones, while Lindsay Smith and Sterling Carlile followed with a 21-9, 21-10 victory. Loganne Abernathy and Riley Warmath added a 21-14, 21-9 win at the threes. The closest match came at the fours, where Riley Boykin and Callie Rowse battled to a 24-22, 19-21, 15-10 three-set win, and Maddie Joyner and Anna Holman closed out the sweep at the fives, 21-16, 21-5.
The stakes rose in the district final, where Chiles faced Leon, a team coming off a 4-1 semifinal win over Lincoln. Leon showed its strength in that semifinal, picking up key courts in straight sets, including a tight 21-19 opening set at the top court, along with a 21-11 win at another position and a 21-8 set at the fours. They also fought through a three-set match at the third position (14-21, 22-20, 7-15)
In the final, however, Chiles proved to be in control, earning a 4-1 victory to claim the district championship. Hearn and Gibson set the tone again at the ones with a 21-18, 21-7 win over Leon’s Riley Knipple and Reagan Giles. Smith and Carlile dominated at the twos, allowing just 14 total points in a 21-6, 21-8 victory over Dez Zuema and Aubrey Moore. Abernathy and Warmath continued their steady play at the threes, winning 21-14, 21-14 against Bentley Barnard and Riley Perezluha to give Chiles a firm grip on the match.
Joyner and Holman delivered the clinching point at the five spot with a 21-14, 21-10 win against Salem Ehrhardt and Jaz Burdick, sealing the title for the Timberwolves. The lone point for Leon came at the fours, where Jordyn Russell and Kendall Cruse beat Chiles’ Boykin and Rowse in a tightly contested three-set match, 20-22, 21-14, 12-15.
