On August 18, the Chiles volleyball team faced off against North Bay Haven in a non-conference matchup for the first regular-season game of the season. After a historic season last year, the back-to-back state champions look to continue their reign and defend their title as they begin another campaign with their sights set on a third consecutive state championship. Although the team has changed a lot from last year, with new players stepping into key roles, the Timberwolves entered the season with the same expectations and championship hopes. The season opener against North Bay Haven provided the team with its first opportunity to compete together and showed that Chiles remains a strong team as it begins its title defense.
The Timberwolves started off strong in the first set gaining a 8-1 lead with multiple kills from right side hitter Avery Banks (Sr.). As the Timberwolves continued to serve aggressively and attack at the net, hitters Loganne Abernathy (Sr.) and Sterling Carlile (Jr.) helped keep the pressure on North Bay Haven with an aggressive offensive attack, a style of play that has become a trademark of Chiles volleyball. Chiles won the first set with a final set score of 25-11.
Although the Timberwolves started the second set down 4-1, solid defense from the back row and consistent setting from Riley Boykin (Sr.) helped Chiles take the lead with a score of 9-6. After more heavy offense and multiple blocks from Loganne Abernathy, Chiles won the second set with a set score of 25-11.
Chiles got off to another quick start in the third set, jumping out to a 10-4 lead while continuing to apply pressure that North Bay Haven struggled to answer. The Timberwolves completed the sweep with set scores of 25-11, 25-11, and 25-10. Chiles’ next match is an away non-conference match against Forest in Ocala, FL.
