Weekly Florida Jobless Claims Dip

By The News Service of Florida

The U.S. Department of Labor on Thursday estimated 5,470 first-time unemployment claims were filed in Florida last week, down from a revised count of 5,797 the week ending Aug. 8.

The weekly count, which has now averaged 5,970 claims a week since the start of the year, comes as two companies involved in transportation and warehousing advised the state of pending layoffs affecting more than 350.

Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notifications recently sent to the state Department of Commerce included an announcement from Postal Center International, Inc. regarding the closure of its Weston headquarters, affecting 181 workers, and one from Saddle Creek Logistics Services in Plant City, stating plans to lay off 178 employees in October.

The Department of Commerce will update the state’s unemployment numbers on Friday.

The state’s unemployment rate for June, 4.7 percent, represents an estimated 525,000 Floridians qualified as out-of-work from a workforce of 11.14 million.
