Maclay celebrated Homecoming in a big way Friday night, September 25, rolling past FAMU DRS 56-22 to remain undefeated on the season. The Marauders jumped out to a commanding lead early and carried a 49-6 advantage into halftime before adding another touchdown in the second half to improve to 6-0.
Maclay wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. On the Marauders’ opening drive, running back Anthony White broke free for a 15-yard touchdown run, giving Maclay a 6-0 lead. After forcing a three-and-out, Maclay went right back to the ground. White added a 30-yard touchdown run to push the lead to 13-0. White found the end zone again on another rushing touchdown later in the quarter, extending the advantage to 19-0 following a missed extra-point attempt.
FAMU DRS then had a costly mistake when a snap sailed over the Rattlers’ quarterback’s head and rolled into the end zone, resulting in a safety while giving Maclay a 21-0 lead. The Marauders continued to pour it on. Quarterback Beau Beshears connected with White on a 30-yard touchdown pass, making it 28-0. FAMU DRS struggled to get out of its own territory, and another mistake gave Maclay excellent field position when the Rattlers’ punter mishandled the punt near the 10-yard line. Maclay quickly took advantage, with Beshears finding Tucker Poppell for a 10-yard touchdown pass to make it 35-0.
Maclay recorded its first turnover of the game with about three minutes remaining in the first half when Beshears threw an interception near the Marauders’ 20-yard line. FAMU DRS capitalized on the opportunity. Larry Jewell III came down with a 20-yard touchdown pass, making a contested catch over two Maclay defenders to put the Rattlers on the board at 35-6.
Maclay answered before halftime. Zae Ritter hauled in a touchdown pass to extend the lead to 42-6, and the Marauders added another score when Beshears connected with Poppell for his second touchdown reception of the night. Maclay entered halftime with a 49-6 advantage.
The Marauders added another touchdown in the third quarter, while FAMU DRS continued to battle and scored 16 points in the fourth quarter. The Rattlers ultimately outscored Maclay 16-0 in the final period, but the early deficit proved too much to overcome.
Maclay finished with a 56-22 victory, improving to 6-0 on the season and keeping its undefeated record intact following its Homecoming victory.
