In a surprising move, Forrest Van Camp has decided to run for re-election. Van Camp, who is the current holder of the Leon County School Board Seat 1, had previously given all indications that he would step down after his term expired. However, he filed his paperwork with the Leon County Supervisor of elections today.
Before Van Camp’s change of heart, the race had drawn three candidates; Diana Oropallo, Alva Striplin, and Patrick Madden.
The intriguing thing about this race is the amount of money raised to date and the elected officials who have decided to back a candidate.
Orapallo has raised $29,535 and has the public and financial backing of County Commissioner Bryan Desloge and City Commissioner Scott Maddox. Striplin has raised $17,000 and Madden has raised $4,000.
During the last race for the seat in 2010, the total contributions raised by all candidates was just under $30,000. With approximately 10 months to go before the 2014 primary, all candidates have raised just over $50,000.
Van Camp told Tallahassee Reports he had decided not to run because of some health issues, but that those issues have been addressed and he is prepared to continue to serve the people of District 1.

While the editor of the Tallahassee Democrat was, writing blogs about his BFF and walking buddy, Scott Maddox, and yet another walk in the park event together, Tallahassee Reports scooped the Tallahassee Democrat with this info by over a week.
In addition, while newspapers around the state were breaking news about Alex Sink the Tallahassee Democrat editor was blogging about his public relations friend/city commissioner Maddox – and their tiptoeing through the tulips together – which is disturbing on so many levels. It is nice to have an alternate source for credible news that is not slanted to accommodate the public relations and board buddies of the Tallahassee Democrat editor. How much longer is the Gannett Board of Directors going to be asleep at the wheel, that they allow an editor to operate on such an unprofessional level?
This speaks volumes:
Orapallo has raised $29,535 and has the public and financial backing of County Commissioner Bryan Desloge and City Commissioner Scott Maddox.
With Maddox’s endorsement, I know that he is a crook and without scruples.
