The recent surge in Leon county employment was welcome news given the recent losses in jobs. We reported earlier this week that Leon county added just over 4,000 jobs in September. See report here.
A new report provided by the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity gives an indication of what type of jobs were created in September.
The report looks at the Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), which includes surrounding counties, but Leon county makes up the lions share of the employment in the MSA report.

The table above shows that of the 4,000 jobs created, approximately 1,800 came from the private sector and 2,200 came from State government.
Within the private sector, the overwhelming majority of jobs created in September were in the Leisure and Hospitality sector (1,500). This is consistent with jobs related to the influx of college students that happens during this time each year.
The report also indicates that higher paying jobs in sectors like construction, manufacturing, and professional business services saw no increase in jobs in September.

Applebees on Thomasville road has shut down. Googling has indicated that the chain has been closing stores for a few years now. I would be interested in hearing about their demise from a local perspective. I have my own ideas but I wonder if their local staff and management are available for interview.
Seasonal…students back in town and government related, meaning tax $$$ is needed. Not much of an economic boost
