Today the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced that the Tallahassee International Airport (TLH) has received a federal grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation in the amount of $1.77 million. The grant funds will be used for the design of an International Passenger Processing Facility (IPPF) and associated Federal Inspection Station (FIS) at TLH.
The Tallahassee grant was part of a U.S. Transportation award of $986 million in airport infrastructure grants to 354 airports in 44 states and Puerto Rico and Micronesia. This is the fifth allotment of the total $3.18 billion in Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Airport Improvement Program (AIP) funding for airports across the United States.
“Infrastructure projects funded by these grants will advance safety, improve travel, generate jobs and provide other economic benefits for local communities,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao.
“This processing facility will provide the ability for goods to be shipped to and received from worldwide destinations,” Mayor John Dailey said. “Tallahassee’s ability to import and export internationally will help to further grow our local economy and is great news for our community and businesses across our region.”
The City of Tallahassee, in a press release, noted that next “steps include the development of a proposed Foreign Trade Zone, which will support current commercial stakeholders and serve as a substantial economic development tool. The new Foreign Trade Zone, once approved by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, is expected to stimulate economic growth and accelerate the recruitment of new commerce to the region.”
A total joke. Tallahassee regional or even Tallahassee Municipal is more like reality.

Read the fine print on this grant. The airport needs to provide some portion of it in order to use it. What is the match amount? The only revenue for this airport is parking!
Add another 1.77mil to the debt!
Hey TR, can you do an Investigative Report on the “TEMPORARY” Park at the intersection of Orange Avenue and Meridian Street that the City built knowing it will all be wiped out soon when they build the Bus Depot there later? How much was spent (wasted) and WHO wanted it and who the Contractors were, etc?
Ha, Tallahassee Airport is barely Inter-County. How about we just call it Inner-City…..International – ROGLMAO…..
How about finding some funds to make Capital Circle in both direction from the airport 4 lanes? We have one lane of traffic in each direction traveling to the airport in the capital city of the 3rd largest state in the country! This really speaks volumes to any first time visit by company execs checking out Tallahassee as a future city to expand. It clearly says we cant (or dont want to) handle a little extra traffic to accomodate their business.
I agree Vern. We demand the City remove the “International” designation.
We are the only “international” airport in the world with one lane access to the airport.
And yet, they are willing to split a Low Income Community down the middle with a Four Lane Road from the Airport to Lake Bradford Road.
I’d rather see Gaines St. made into a four-lane road, but that will never happen.
Good thing there’s 33,000 empty sears at the game – otherwise exiting fans would be sitting there three hours instead of two.
Puerto Rico or Tallahassee:
Which communitty will divert the most Federal dollars into graft, corruption, and kickbacks?
Well Snidely, if gillum was still “mayor”, it would be a toss-up or a clear win for Tally. With maddox and smith currently out of action, it still MAY be Puerto Rico in the long run.
