An Orlando man who threatened to commit a mass shooting at Florida State University is set to be detained behind bars until the trial. The accused allegedly threatened to commit the atrocities by posting a photo online of the image he was planning to use. Federal agents said that the accused had a history of violence and concerning behavior.
The Children’s Services Council (CSC) of Leon County announced on Thursday that the group will host three listening sessions across the county for families to offer direct input on how anticipated community investment funding should be used. On January 26 and 31, and February 1, participants will have the opportunity to discuss possible program funding with members of the CSC Leon team.
On December 13th, the Leon County Commission approved an agreement with the Florida Department of Corrections (FDOC) for the use of Wakulla Correctional Institution inmates to continue providing roadside maintenance and other related jobs for the Public Works Department. Leon County saves roughly $195,200 each year by utilizing inmate labor instead of hiring permanent full-time staff.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ administration is asking the state university system about resources they are using related to “diversity, equity and inclusion and critical race theory.” DeSantis has been a vocal opponent of the “trendy ideology” being used in Florida’s K-12 school system, and is now also taking steps to address it at the higher education level. The announcement came after a memo was released saying colleges and universities are required to “provide a comprehensive list of all staff, programs and campus activities related to diversity, equity and inclusion and critical race theory.”
Florida legislation related to college athletes’ name, image, and likeness could be expanded to allow a university or college to direct compensation to student-athletes. Previously, a student-athlete could only receive compensation through third-party groups unaffiliated with a university.
