Amid a community debate over the need for more police officers, City Commissioner Jack Porter told a Tallahassee Democrat reporter that Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revell said “law enforcement cannot prevent gun violence.”
Porter added, then “why is the city proposing a tax increase to supposedly hire more police officers?”
The Tallahassee Democrat printed Porter’s comments.
City officials, in a comment to TR, said that Revell has never made such a statement. In addition, TR was told the Tallahassee Democrat reporter never reached out to Revell to verify Porter’s statement.
The comment from Porter comes during the debate over the city’s proosal to add more police officers as a part of a plan to address increasing violent crime trends.
TR has previously reached out to Porter for her position on adding more police officers, but she has not responded.
This is a developing story, check back for updates.
What we need is a group of masked vigilantes who could have a secret headquarters and solve crimes from a mystery van with a talking dog. I say its long past time for this kind of criminal justice in our community.,
The real news angle to this story is that anyone actually still reads the Fake Newsocrat.
The patient is on life support.
Boris Yeltsin, is that you? Vladimir Putin here. Long time no see. Give me a call, we’ll do lunch.
I’d say Tallahasee Reports is definitely skewed to the RIGHT. I should would like to know where the money comes from.
Quote of the week
“Suck it up on the tax increase if you voted for John, Dianne and Curtis. You had a chance for better representation and blew it.”
Inyra – August 9, 2023
“The trends hold true year after year after year, so we know it’s coming, but why that is, I don’t know,” Revell said. “There’s nothing anyone can do to prevent that. We as the police, all we can do is simply bring justice to that family as quickly as possible.”

Glad we all have such an outlet to present our opinions…don’t confuse them with facts such as what the police chief has said and done.
TPD can’t prevent crime. All they can do is show up afterwards, hopefully to investigate it well enough to make arrests IF they have the staff. I have family members on the job, they say the same thing, but they add they need more officers so as to do their after-the-crime jobs. They also say that all cops lie, they legally are allowed to, that’s how they trap a lot of perps. But even they concede in private that police chief who won’t acknowledge the point he made about crime, though he may have made the point using different words, is the same as a lie and he needs to go. And let’s not forget the shady way the City hired this police chief to begin with. The position should be elected.
I do agree that a shot fired at someone or in their direction should be attempted murder, nothing less.
Also, suck it up on the tax increase if you voted for John, Dianne and Curtis. You had a chance for better representation and blew it to vote “for the devil you know.”
Does this “reporting” website lean in a particular political direction?
@ NE Not-So… Save it slick… I’ve stated my opposition to the tax increase from the get-go… so, no win for you there. The two progressively-Marxist Democrats on the Commission oppose the tax increase simply because it would go toward Law Enforcement, and their lemming supporters know that all to well. They also hope that some weak-minded I’s and NPA’s might fall for their ruse of fiscal responsibility, and foolishly give them their vote.
Like I noted, “If a tax increase was being proposed that would go toward yet another wasteful, failed, and feckless left-wing virtue signaling program… they’d be all over it, taxpayers be damned.”
… next
Law enforcement can’t typically prevent initial violent crimes…but with limited resources, it’s kind of hard to investigate violent crimes and arrest violent offenders, to prevent them from committing more violence.
Not everything has to be left vs right.
Ed Lyle, look at that. Unity against the tax increase! Nice to see.
The real issues at City Hall aren’t ideological, they are insider vs outsider. No one besides those getting directly paid seem to support raising taxes
For the record… there’s no such thing as “gun violence”. A gun is an inanimate object that does not act of its own volition. The “violence” rests within the criminal committing the violent act. Whether the violent criminal uses a gun, knife, baseball bat, golf club, or vehicle is irrelevant. The criminal is violent one, and the tool they use to commit the violent act has no bearing whatsoever on the intent to act.
As for the progressively-Marxist Democrats on the City Commission and their local Pravda… what did you expect? Democrats lie, cheat, steal, and rig even their own elections… oh, and for some evil and sadistic reason, love to kill innocent babies up to and including the moment of birth.
As for the tax increase, I do not agree with it… but make no mistake about it, the opposition to the tax increase by the progressively-Marxist Democrats on the City Commission is NOT due to a fiscally responsible or conservative mindset. They are against the increase because it is going toward law enforcement… period; full stop.
If a tax increase was being proposed that would go toward yet another wasteful, failed, and feckless left-wing virtue signaling program… they’d be all over it, taxpayers be damned.
The PBA won’t even support the tax hike because they know how politically toxic and unneeded it is. But sure, falsely demonize one of the few elected officials standing against raising our taxes..
John, Dianne and Curtis also have said there’s basically nothing government can do like Revell did, and they’re still supporting gouging us with new taxes
Commissioner Porter is correct, adding police will not limit or stop gun violence. There are forward thinking initiatives and programs that have demonstrably reduced gun violence in other cities but Tallahassee pulled out of one of those programs and decided to send good money after bad with the TPD.
In another Kudos (NOT) to city officials, Proterra, the EV bus manufacturer, just filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
“The trends hold true year after year after year, so we know it’s coming, but why that is, I don’t know,” Revell said. “There’s nothing anyone can do to prevent that.”
Lawrence Revell, July 31
I second that…. voters are getting what they voted for.
Expect more violent crime cause by a local government with an unquenchable thirst for raising taxes. That is what Democrats do. The goal is full blown socialism and crime is the vehicle needed to achieve that goal. Look at Chicago, Seattle and Portland….crime is out of control. The Victims get punished while the criminals are let go. And the increase in crime along with businesses leaving has not deterred the Democrat agenda there.
And George Soros is determined to destroy the U.S. by funding the campaigns of District Attorney candidates that absolutely will not prosecute crime. In Florida, Today, Governor Ron DeSantis announced the suspension of State Attorney Monique Worrell of the 9th Judicial Circuit for neglecting her duty to faithfully prosecute crime in her jurisdiction. While the liberal media will acknowledge her removal, they will not explain the reasons. She let a defended out on bail, who was already out on bail for a terrible crime, who went out and committed another horrible crime.
Daton Viel, accused of raping a young schoolgirl, was out on bail. Then arrested again and she let him out on bail. Veil met his death trying to shoot two cops. Worrell is a disgrace to her profession, to FAMU and should be disbarred. The Democrat political agenda trumps everything no matter is you are a lowly commissioner or President of the U.S. Socialism is the Goal.
Remember when Porter nominated the police abolitionist Taylor Biro to the Citizens Police Review Board. Then, unsurprisingly, Biro had to be removed from the Board due to her anti-police bias (displayed on the cup she brought to the meeting). But Porter and Matlow voted against her removal claiming her diverse views were needed – LOL (the brazenness – you can’t make this stuff up).
That is what Revell said verbatim. Porter is right
Provide a source for your verbatim allegation. Steve S.
Oh, where, oh where, is Porter’s and Matlow’s mentor, Debbie Lightsey, when needed. Certainly hiding behind a bush these days dodging the arrows at her protoges.
Law Enforcement cannot PREVENT gun violence. Just like they can’t PREVENT Crime. To be able to PREVENT something means you KNOW it is about to happen in advance and you stop it from happening. The D.A. needs to hand down proper Charges and the Judges need to give longer sentences. THAT will be the best way to lower the Crime Rate. If you are unarmed and someone shoots at you, it is done in ANGER and THAT is Attempted MURDER, and it should be 15 to 25 Years in Prison, not Assault with 1 to 3 Years.
Just like our Sheriff, our Police Chief needs to an ELECTED Official.
Well we got at least one – maybe two regular commenters – who wont like this reporting on Porter. Actually it is most likely just one.
Oh by the way crime is up!
Chief Revell acted inappropriately at the Tallahassee Greater Chamber of Commerce Amelia Island junket on the taxpayers dime mis-using his office to disparage a Tallahassee business owner. He did not discern that the state attorney was also misusing his office to disparage the business owner. This was an embarrassing incident and both received censures from their own political party.
The narrative coming out of City Hall is that what can they do about crime and the answer is nothing. Chief Revell is a part of City Hall. Good for Porter!
Well folks….you got exactly what you voted for.
