Below are the meeting briefs from the Leon County School Board business meeting on January 10, 2024.
The Leon County School Board recognized the FHSAA State Champion Chiles High School Timberwolves United Flag Football Team and the individual Chiles High School Swim and Dive Team FHSAA State Champions.
The Board approved Superintendent Hanna’s recommendation to award a contract for Property & Casualty Insurance and Brokerage Services to Risk Management Associates, Inc. The approval included the associated District Term Contract which will run for a period of three (3) years with an option to renew for three (3) additional (1) year periods.
The Board approved Superintendent Hanna’s recommended approval of an agreement with the Florida Department of Emergency Management (FDEM) for the use of WeatherStem stations. The Florida Legislature appropriated $1,47 million to fund the Florida Severe Weather Mesonet – WeatherSTEM to provide FDEM with hyper-local, real-time weather data in strategic locations. Ownership of the Weather Stations will be transferred to LCSB upon installation. LCSB will agree to maintain each Weather Station it receives for at least an additional seven years following the end of the WeatherSTEM maintenance agreement. WeatherSTEM maintenance costs are eligible for recovery under the Emergency Management Preparedness and Assistance (EMPA) Grant.
The Board approved Superintendent Hanna’s recommended changes, following a public hearing, to Policy 2522 – related to the challenges of material used in classrooms.
The Board approved Superintendent Hanna’s recommended approval of the 2023-2024 Compensation Proposal between Leon County Schools and The Leon Educational Staff Professional Association (LESPA) Bargaining. Employees shall receive 0.7 cents per hour for each year of creditable and continuous service with the Leon County School District (LCSD) prior to the beginning of the 2023-2024 school year. Pay will be retroactive to the employee’s first workday of the 2023-2024 school year and will be paid over the number of remaining pay periods at the time of processing. Additionally, LESPA has agreed to changes in Article 7.05 regarding temporary duty for LESPA activities, and Article 16 regarding compensation.
The Board approved Superintendent Hanna’s recommendation to approve a contract with Wagstaff & Cartmell and four firms as co-counsel to represent the Board in a lawsuit against social media companies. The contract will provide authority for the law firms to file a lawsuit against Meta, Facebook, Instagram, TikToc, YouTube, and Google, among others alleging marketing practices making the platforms addictive resulting in additional costs to schools in addressing issues related to the addiction.
The proposed contract is with Wagstaff & Cartmell and four co- counsel firms, including a Florida firm. Under the terms of the contract, the law firms are entitled to receive 33% of any monetary or non-monetary recovery. Attorney fees due for non-monetary settlement proceeds cannot exceed money received. Costs will be paid from any recovery. The outcome of this litigation is uncertain but in a related case the trial judge ruled the defendants were not immune from negligence claims under federal law, allowing the case to proceed to discovery.

Why is it illiberals are so quick to sue when they are incapable of CONTROLLING something?
How can you Sue Meta, Facebook, Instagram, TikToc, YouTube, and Google and others on behalf of other peoples KIDS? Next you will be Suing Jim Beam, Johnny Walker, Sammy Hagar and others because there are Kids that are Alcoholic’s. Or Sue McDonalds, Burger King, Wendy’s and others because Kids are Obese. The only thing YOU can do is Ban the Kids from having Cell Phone Use in School. Make them turn them off and keep them in their Locker.
