Auto Burglaries Spike, Violent Crime Incidents Down

TR’s recent analysis of the year-to-date (October 1) crime incident numbers indicated that the total number of crime incidents reported by the Tallahassee Police Department were down 7.9% when compared to the same period in 2023. The YTD report showed that property crime was down 2.9% and violent crime was down 17.5%.

TR’s 4-week trend analysis (as of Oct 12) shows a 35% spike in property crime incidents driven by auto related property crimes when compared to the same 4-week period in 2023. The report also shows a 34.7% decrease in violent crime incidents during this period.

The spike in property crimes is being driven by a 74.1% increase in the Auto Burglary & Theft category. Further analysis shows that the subcategory of auto burglary incidents is up 139%.

Residential and commercial burglaries are both down during this period.

On the violent crime front, Assault & Battery incidents were down 39.2% and Robbery incidents were slightly up during the 4-week period.

Fatal Shootings

During the period, there have been 19 fatal shootings in 2024, compared to 19 fatal shooting deaths in 2023. In 2023, the year ended with a total of 24 fatal shootings.

  1. OK. I am not a fan of Mr. Matlow’s politics. He is much too progressive for me, and I would never vote for him, even though I have eaten at several of his pizza locations, many times.

    The person in the car obviously was impaired. I’m thankful that no one was hurt, this time. Hopefully, especially after this video has surfaced, the has learned a lesson. He has been publicly shamed.

    Now, I am not an attorney, but I’m not sure if there was a driving violation here. I know you will correct me if I’m wrong!

    The car was parked.
    The engine was off.
    No keys were in the ignition.

    I think this police officer in the video was polite and professional.

    The officer asked for backup and support.

    The officer was extremely respectful. I hope I don’t seem naive here, but I support the way this TPD officer handled the situation, and I hope it had nothing to do with politics.
