Florida High, Chiles Softball Win District Tournaments

On May 1, both Florida High and Chiles secured district titles in softball. Chiles won the FHSAA 5A District 2 championship, competing in a bracket that included Lincoln and Leon, while Florida High won the FHSAA 2A District 2 title, in a field that featured Marianna and Taylor County. Both teams were seeded first in their district tournament guaranteeing a spot in the district final since both tournaments included only three teams.

5A District 2

Leon (16-10) defeated Lincoln (7-15) in the first round of the district tournament setting up the district final against top seeded Chiles (19-3). The Timberwolves started the game off strong with two runs in the first inning while keeping Leon scoreless until the third inning. Chiles started to pull away after they scored four runs in the third inning advancing their lead to 6-1 going into the fourth inning. The Timberwolves defense helped close out the game only allowing one run, winning the district title with a score of 8-1.

Notable performances from the Timberwolves included Mia Hemenway (Fr.) who had a batting average of .667, three runs, and one homerun and pitcher Anna Kate Barber (Fr.) who had 10 strikeouts and a .087 OBA (opponent batting average).

2A District 2

After receiving a bye in the first round, Florida High (11-10) played Taylor County (5-18) in the district final. Although Taylor County got on the scoreboard first, the Seminoles took the lead in the third inning, scoring five runs. Florida High would have another five-run inning in the sixth to break the tie and go up 12-7 heading into the final inning. The Florida High defense held the Bulldogs scoreless in seventh inning, ending the game with a score of 12-7.

Notable Performances for Florida High include Layna Photo (Fr.) with four RBI’s, one run and one homerun and pitcher Shyla Wiley (So.) with seven strikeouts and a .371 OBA.
