On Aug. 26, the Maclay Marauders hosted the Leon Lions in a non-conference matchup, marking the teams’ first meeting of the regular season. Both teams battled throughout the match, with several tightly contested sets, but Leon ultimately came out on top, earning a 3-1 victory to improve to 4-3 on the season.
Maclay got off to a strong start in the first set, holding the lead throughout. Leon’s Riley Perezluha (Sr.) began to find her rhythm at the service line late in the set, but it wasn’t enough to spark a comeback as Maclay took the opening set 25-23.
Leon opened the second set in much better fashion, taking an early 8-4 lead while finding more consistency on offense. Maclay managed to close the gap to 17-14, but Leon took advantage of its momentum and pulled away to win the second set 25-18.
The third set was the most dramatic of the match. Maclay jumped out to an 11-0 lead behind the serving of Stella Osiecki (So.). Leon refused to back down, however, finding a rhythm with multiple quick sets through the middle to eventually take a 20-19 lead. After an improbable comeback, the Lions completed the turnaround and won the third set 25-19.
Maclay again grabbed an early lead in the fourth set, but the Marauders were unable to maintain it as Leon mounted another comeback. The Lions closed out the set 25-21 to win the match 3-1, with set scores of 23-25, 25-18, 25-19 and 25-21.
