Chiles and Florida High battled through a back-and-forth matchup Friday night, with the Timberwolves’ defense repeatedly creating opportunities to keep the game close. Despite forcing multiple turnovers and scoring twice off takeaways, Chiles fell to the Seminoles 24-14 at home on Aug. 28.
Florida High opened the game with a defensive stop before turning the opportunity into points. The Seminoles drove down the field and found Ar’Tavian Brown for a touchdown pass with eight minutes remaining in the first quarter to take an early 7-0 lead.
Chiles’ defense quickly responded. Reece Hull forced a fumble that gave the Timberwolves possession at the Florida High 30-yard line. Chiles was unable to turn the takeaway into points, however, missing a field goal late in the first quarter and entering the second quarter still trailing 7-0.
Florida High extended its lead early in the second quarter when Brown caught a screen pass and took it in for his second touchdown of the night, putting the Seminoles ahead 14-0.
The Timberwolves answered with another defensive takeaway. With about five minutes remaining in the first half, Chiles’ Bo Pearson recovered a fumble and returned it for a touchdown after Mason McCants forced the turnover, cutting Florida High’s lead to 14-7.
Chiles’ defense struck again shortly after they intercepted a Florida High pass and returned it for a touchdown, tying the game at 14-14. Hagen Perdue converted the extra point to even the score.
The Timberwolves continued to create opportunities before halftime, forcing another fumble near midfield. Maryan Jordan recovered the loose ball at the 50-yard line, giving Chiles another chance to take the lead heading into the break.
Florida High opened the second half with a strong kickoff return from Aaron Johnson, setting the Seminoles up with favorable field position. Florida High capitalized on the short field, scoring a touchdown to regain the lead at 21-14.
Chiles moved the ball into Florida High territory late in the game, reaching the 30-yard line as the fourth quarter began. The Timberwolves, however, were unable to finish the drive.
With about nine minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, Chiles faced a crucial fourth-down attempt from its own 20-yard line but failed to convert, giving Florida High possession.
The Timberwolves’ defense kept the game alive by coming up with a fourth-down stop of its own, taking over at its own 45-yard line. Chiles was unable to produce another scoring drive, though, and Florida High eventually put the game out of reach with a field goal with 15 seconds remaining.
The kick gave the Seminoles a 24-14 lead and sealed the victory.
Despite the loss, Chiles’ defense repeatedly gave the Timberwolves opportunities throughout the game, forcing multiple fumbles and scoring twice off turnovers. Florida High, however, made the most of its field position and finished the night with the only points of the second half.
