The Montford Mustangs defeated the Nims Trojans at Gene Cox Stadium on September 14 behind their sturdy defense and a big game from Simon Pettion.
Montford, the only undefeated team in Leon County, looked to continue their dominance versus the Trojans, with a record of 2-2. For the third straight game, the Mustangs won the toss and chose to kick off to their opponent. On the Trojans’ first possession, they turned the ball over on downs, when Jonathan Sampson’s pass was batted down by the Mustangs’ Gavin Snipes.
On their first drive, the Mustangs utilized the pass with Jase Dault throwing over the middle to AJ Henry for a 22-yard reception. The Nims fierce defense held the Mustangs to four third downs on the drive, but it was not enough. Dominic Scott ran for 11 yards to get into Trojan red zone. Nims’ strong line forced a fourth down with 16 yards to go until the orange first down marker, but Dault fired a bullet into the hands of receiver Simon Pettion for the game’s first score.
At the start of the second quarter, the Trojans looked to even the game. On the first play, Sampson looked to his left and fired a pass. Montford’s Pettion read the route, intercepted the pass in full stride, and within seconds he was in the end zone. DJ Read ran the ball in for a two point conversion behind blocks from Jackson Davis and Adrian Ortiz. “The O Line works as one unit to protect the QB” said Davis afterwards.
On the kickoff return, Nims’ Treyshan Brown broke 3 tackles and wasn’t brought down until Montford territory. Sampson then fired a long spiraling pass down the sideline, and receiver Jaylen Bowser leapt up and corralled the ball with two hands as he crashed down to the turf. The 30-yard reception seemed to give Nims momentum, but Montford forced a fumble that was recovered by Landon Del Prado on the very next play.
After an 18 yard keeper by Dault, Dominic Scott stiff armed a Trojan defender and ran for 34 yards. One more first down pass to AJ Henry set up a touchdown run for Montford at the end of the first half, and when the Mustangs scored a touchdown to open the second half, Montford held a 28-0 lead.
Nims’ Jaylen Bowser had a big second half, including a touchdown run to make the score 28-8, as it would remain for the final minutes of the game. This game marked the first time in Montford school history that an eighth grade class went undefeated against district 2 schools, (Cobb, Nims, Griffin, and Fairview) from sixth to eighth grade.
