On Sep. 23, Maclay and Leon went back and forth as the two Tallahassee programs met at Maclay for a 22-event swim meet. Both teams had strong performances, with Maclay winning 13 events and the boys’ team taking the team score 584-558, while Leon finished ahead in the girls’ team standings 471-429 and won the combined team score 1,029-1,013.
The meet featured wins from swimmers on both sides as the teams continued building toward the postseason.
For Maclay, Olivia Holt had a strong night, winning the girls 200-yard individual medley in 2:17.53 and the 100-yard butterfly in 58.66. Molly Lambert won the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle, while Emmie Sutton won the 500-yard freestyle. Eliza Horton also earned a victory in the 100-yard breaststroke. Leon also put together several notable performances on the girls side. Madalyn Van Hise won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:16.24, finishing just ahead of Maclay’s Eliza Horton. Osea Rawlings won the 100-yard backstroke in 1:11.34, while Leon’s girls also won the 400-yard freestyle relay.
Maclay’s boys were led by Brennan Abatecola, who won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:53.25 and the 100-yard freestyle in 50.84. William Chen won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:11.42 and the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:09.57, while David Paquette won the 50-yard freestyle in 23.38.
Leon answered with several victories of its own. Jake Askey won both the boys 100-yard butterfly in 56.03 and the 500-yard freestyle in 4:51.23. Grant Hudnall won the boys 100-yard backstroke in 1:07.07, while Leon’s boys also won the opening 200-yard medley relay.
Maclay’s boys finished the meet by winning the 200-yard freestyle relay and 400-yard freestyle relay. The 200 freestyle relay team of William Chen, Brennan Abatecola, David Paquette and Peter Dunkerley finished in 1:32.90, while the same four swimmers combined for a 3:30.85 in the 400 freestyle relay.
With the championship portion of the season approaching, both Maclay and Leon will continue working toward regional and state qualification opportunities.
