The Leon County School Board heard a legislative update during their last school board meeting on January 25 by Jessica Janasiewicz, who is with Rutledge Ecenia P.A., a governmental consultant firm.
During the presentation, the consultant touched on legislation related to parental rights in education, HB 1557/SB 1834.
The bill currently requires:
• School districts must adopt procedures for notifying parents if there is a change in their student’s services or monitoring related to a student’s mental, emotional, or physical health or wellbeing.
• Prohibits school districts from maintaining procedures that withhold or encourage students to withhold such information from parents.
• Restricts discussions of sexual orientation or gender identity to only age-appropriate and developmentally appropriate for students.
• Prohibits a school district from encouraging discussions of these topics in primary grades.
The Board will get additional updates during future school board meetings.
Parental “Bill of Rights”? You mean Fascism in Florida Government. Tallahassee Reports is a sickening news source
Parents have the natural right to decide what, where, and by whom their children are educated. School choice for everyone regardless of income…
This is absolutely outrageous I am so glad that I do not have any children in school and I will not bring my grandkids down here and put them in some school like that. You better believe that back in the day when I was in school and something like that was. Going on our parents would storm into school.
Pardon for ranting, but I also want to tell the Republicans in the Legislature to pass the DeSantis redistricting map not your concessions to the Democrats map.
Not nearly strong enough.
“Restricts discussions of sexual orientation or gender identity to only age-appropriate and developmentally appropriate for students.” Why are there such discussions at all? They are supposed to be teaching academic subjects. Additionally, what the school personnel thinks is age-appropriate may very well not be what the parent thinks is age-appropriate.
“Prohibits a school district from encouraging discussions of these topics in primary grades.” A school district needs to be prohibited from having these discussions in primary grades not just prohibited from encouraging them.
I thought the Republicans were in the majority. Why do they always make concessions to the left? Are they not as smart as the Democrats? Are they corrupt? Are they sympathetic to the left and think their constituents are not smart?
It’s sickening.
