On March 28th, the Leon County School Board discussed the revised Human Growth and Development curriculum. At the March 7th meeting, the Board delayed adoption of the curriculum due to concerns of some parents and school board members. Based on that meeting, the Superintendent and staff removed optional material from the curriculum that may have been “pushing the envelope” and edited other language.
Many passionate citizens came to speak on the issue voicing opinions across the political spectrum. Most, if not all, spoke in favor of the curriculum being approved as revised. Several speakers noted that parents uncomfortable with the material could have their child opt out from the classes, but that certain children greatly benefit from the information, and some desperately needed the information.
The Chair of the Commission on the Status of Women and Girls, Kelly Otte, stated, “Reproduction health education that is comprehensive and language inclusive is part of an evidence informed and multi-faceted approach that focuses on prevention and heath equity for adolescents.” She continued, “Comprehensive human development education provided by parents, schools and other professionals helps adolescents as well as adults make positive informed and safe choices about healthy relationships and reproductive health throughout their lifespan.”
Additionally, Brandy Andrew spoke on behalf of Moms for Liberty.
Ms. Andrew explained that though Moms for Liberty chose to focus on grades 6th-8th, they found several concerns with the high school material, and asked the Board to review the material before 2024. Ms. Andrew also expressed gratitude for those who listened to the concerns of Moms for Liberty.
Chair Alva Smith thanked the speakers for their civility. She stated, “We appreciate everyone who spoke tonight, and the way you spoke.”
LCS Board member Darryl Jones stated that he “never agreed with the modifications,” and was surprised to see a revised version being presented. The Board Attorney advised that some of the optional lessons were removed, but the remainder had only minor edits.
Vice Chair Roseanne Wood thought some of the removed material should have stayed. However, she understood that compromise had to happen, and thought the important material regarding human body parts, STD prevention and birth control remained solid in the curriculum.
Superintendent Rocky Hannah commented on the process of removing the material calling it, “surgical.” Hanna said, “I think listening to the speakers tonight we were fairly successful.”
The item must be posted on the School Board’s website for twenty days before a vote, meaning that the earliest the Board can vote on the curriculum will be at the April meeting.

Wow… if that twisted and ridiculous DEI codeword salad doesn’t prove how removed from its core mission our Public Indoctrination System (PIS) has become… I don’t know what will. And since when did our K-12 PIS curriculum include helping “… adults make positive informed and safe choices about healthy relationships and reproductive health throughout their lifespan.”?
Wow… just… wow
