The Rickards Raiders hosted the Ribault Trojans (Jacksonville) on Saturday afternoon and won 47-33 in a battle of top ranked high school girls basketball teams.
The Raiders (9-4) came into the game ranked 11th in Class 5A while the Trojans (10-2) – who defeated Rickards earlier in the year – were ranked 7th in Class 4A.
Despite Ribault’s lofty ranking and previous victory, on Saturday the Rickards Raiders were the better team.
The Raiders built a 15-point lead going into the fourth quarter on scoring paced by GiGi Henry (15), Jariyah Jordan (8), and Journee Belcher (8). The Raider defense and the ball handling of Ashley Holmes – who added five points – made it difficult for Ribault to cut into the lead after a slow first quarter.
However, the Raiders who appeared to be in complete control of game, faced a run by the Trojans at the start of the fourth quarter led by senior Kaya Massey (13). The lead was cut to 8 before Rickards’ Jordan hit two free throws.
During the pivotal fourth quarter, Lauryn Pye (7) scored five of the nine Raider fourth quarter points, as the Raiders closed out the game amid a pressing Trojan defense 47-33.
The Raiders will host the FSU High School Seminoles (7-9) on Tuesday, January 9th at 7:30 p.m.
Meanwhile, Tallahassee has possibly had 4 homicides already in 2024, only 7 days into the new year.
Congrats ladies!
Go Lady Raiders!
