On Wednesday night, the Chiles Timberwolves boys soccer team defeated the Leon Lions 1-0. The lone goal was scored by freshman Salvatore Giove.
The Timberwolves moved to 8-3-1 with the win and are currently ranked 8th in the 6A State Class rankings, per Maxpreps.
This season the Timberwolves have had important wins against Florida High, Suwannee, Maclay, Lincoln, South Walton, and Choctawhatchee, in addition to a district win defeating Leon.
The team’s leading scorers are Caleb Gaines (Sr, 7 goals), Danny Mauldin (Jr, 6 goals, 2 assists), and Isaac Mayer (Sr, 5 goals).
Junior Danny Mauldin says that Gulf Breeze – which is the top ranked team in the 6A Class – remains the biggest challenge for the Timberwolves. Mauldin says, “The strength of our team this season is our ability to create good chances in front of the goal and to be able to pass around the other teams.”
The Timberwolves’ next game is against Florida High on the road on Friday Jan. 12. Next week, they have multiple games including Gulf Breeze on Monday Jan. 15, Suwannee on Wednesday Jan. 17, and Lincoln on Friday Jan. 19.
Last year Chiles finished 16-3, won their 6A Division 2 Championship and made it to the Regional Semifinals. The boys are coached by Bryan McDonald who has been with Chiles since 2020. Under his leadership, Chiles has won back-to-back FHSAA District Championships and made it to Regional Semifinals the past two years.
