On April 22, 2024, Leon County School (LCS) Board Member Alva Smith stated one of her budget priorities is to look at the financial impact of downsizing the school district due to declining enrollment. 

Tallahassee’s StarMetro bus system is gearing up for a new upgraded transit center. To celebrate, the City recently held a ceremonial on the site of the future Southside Transit Center (STC) , located on the corner of Orange Avenue and Meridian Street.

From Friday night, the Leon County Sheriff’s Office began working a death investigation on the 7000 block of Ox Bow Road located in the Ox Bottom neighborhood. It is considered an active investigation and they say there’s no current threat to the community.

LOCAL SPORTS NEWS

The Florida State football program produced 10 picks in the 2024 NFL Draft, which concluded Saturday, and was the only team in the country to have multiple defensive linemen, multiple defensive backs and multiple wide receivers selected. FSU was one of six teams nationally with three top-40 selections.

Florida State baseball, despite getting blown out in the Sunday matchup 16-4, won two games out of three on the road against No. 6 ranked Duke Blue Devils. Friday night’s win was a 4-2 victory and Saturday’s game was a 7-6 victory.

FLORIDA NEWS

Former Florida Senate President Mike Haridopolos announced his candidacy for Florida’s 8th Congressional District after fully qualifying for the 2024 election on Friday. Haridopolos received the endorsement of multiple conservative figures in Florida politics, including current district eight Republican Rep. Bill Posey, who is set to retire at the end of the year. Florida Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis endorsed Haridopolos on social media following his announcement as well. Haridopolos served as president of the Senate from 2010 to 2012.Gov.

Florida is appealing a federal court decision that stripped it of the authority to manage environmental permitting for waterways and wetlands. The action follows a U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia ruling that invalidated the state’s control over the State 404 Program, which regulates dredging and filling activities.

NATIONAL NEWS

Arrests of campus protesters demonstrating against the ongoing war in Gaza continued over the weekend, including more than 100 people at Boston’s Northeastern University early Saturday. Dozens more were arrested at Washington University in St. Louis, Arizona State University, and Indiana University, adding to more than 600 people detained at colleges across the US in recent weeks (see map). 

Two separate storm systems traveled across several states over the weekend, leaving at least five people dead and several others injured. Tornadoes struck Oklahoma, Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, and Missouri, with warnings extending across parts of Texas, Louisiana, Wisconsin, and Illinois. Tens of millions of Americans were under a severe weather watch, and more than 100,000 people were left without power. See photos of the damage here.

  1. Same shady politics involved in Haridopolos that was done with Laurie Cox. Both should be removed form government.

  2. shady handoff right before qualifying for old “Hair-do” Haridopolos the new congresscritter elect. Laurie Cox did the same thing to sneak on school board
