FLORIDA NEWS

Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody announced Wednesday that the state is filing a formal complaint against Starbucks for potentially violating anti-discrimination laws through any racial “quota” system, or through trainings on diversity, equity and inclusion topics. She made the announcement on The Sean Hannity Show, which was hosted by Gov. Ron DeSantis.

The American Civil Liberties Union celebrated a ruling by a federal judge blocking part of a Florida law that prohibits the transportation of illegal immigrants into the state. Judge Roy Altman of the United States District Court Southern District of Florida argued that because it’s the preemptive authority of the federal government to govern immigration policy and the transport of illegal aliens, the aspect of the Florida law is not enforceable. He granted a preliminary injunction against the law.

The Legislature on Tuesday formally sent at least 27 bills to Gov. Ron DeSantis, including a measure that would create a new category of “rural emergency hospitals” that backers say would help ensure health-care access in rural areas. The measure (SB 644) stems from a federal law that allowed the designation of rural emergency hospitals and made them eligible for Medicare payments. The hospitals are required to be licensed by states, creating a need for the bill.

  1. A 2022 mayoral candidate was arrested after allegedly robbing a Dollar General store and attempting to disguise himself as an employee before escaping with cash stuffed in his pockets, according to court records.

Police found Whitfield Leland, 44, by following a trail of cash spewing from his pockets that led to where he was hiding in the wooded area at the intersection of North Bronough and West Georgia streets.

…Shortly after, Leland told him to open the safe, but the manager informed Leland the “the safe was delayed and would not open right away.”
“The suspect responded, ‘I should have remembered from the last time,'” records say.
