LOCAL NEWS

Leon County Commissioner Bill Proctor has requested that utility bills be waived for customers who experienced power outages for two days or more due to the tornadoes that swept through the local areas earlier this month. Proctor asked city commissioners and Talquin Electric to waive $300 per household for utility customers who were impacted by the power losses.

Leon County Government will recognize and celebrate local Italian restaurant Bagigio’s, one of the first recipients supported through the Targeted Emergency Assistance Microgrants (TEAM) Leon Business Assistance Program.

Leon County School Board news briefs from the May 28th meeting addresses parental notification policy (3-2 vote), new contract for Board attorney, and out of county travel.

A nearly 50-year-old cold case in Tallahassee has been cracked. An indictment revealed that James Dudley Jr. was arrested Friday and faces a first-degree murder charge in connection to the cold case. He’s accused of shooting and killing Richard Moore on December 29, 1976. The indictment also revealed Dudley Jr. would have been 15 years old when the incident happened.

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection has finalized the $8.2 million purchase of what are known as conservation easements at Cherokee Plantation, which is about six miles north of Tallahassee.  The 4,808-acre property is one of five tracts of lands in Leon and Jefferson counties that is included in the Red Hills Conservation Florida Forever Project, a 17,875-acre initiative begun in 2019 to protect wildlife, wetlands and groundwater recharge areas.  Cherokee Plantation stretches from Old Cetnerville Road across Thomasville Road and touches Lake Iamonia.

No. 5 National Seed Florida State Men’s Golf fell to Auburn in Wednesday’s NCAA Golf National Championship, 3-2, at the Omni La Costa North Course in Carlsbad, Calif. However, During Wednesday’s National Championship, Luke Clanton was announced as a Division I PING First-Team All-American in partnership with the GOLF Channel.

FLORIDA NEWS

The State Board of Education reinforced its stance Wednesday to protecting the integrity of women and girls in sports by determining a student’s biological sex, and not gender identity, will be the factor to participate in the Florida High School Athletic Association. The board unanimously approved the new bylaws for the FHSAA for the upcoming 2024-2025 school year.

An election model expects the partisan makeup of Florida’s congressional delegation to remain entirely unchanged after the 2024 election with a high degree of certainty. The model predicts Rick Scott to win with an 85 percent chance of victory over Democrat Debbie Mucarsel-Powell. Of note, the only non-incumbent expected to win this November so far is Republican Mike Haridopolos, the former president of the Florida Senate who is running in replacement of incumbent Republican Bill Posey.

Major League Baseball officially updated its statistics leaderboard yesterday to include 2,300 qualifying men who played in the Negro Leagues between 1920 and 1948. The integration incorporates findings from a three-year research process initiated after MLB first recognized the Negro Leagues as major leagues in December 2020.

  1. Rudy Fergeson Curtis Richardson signs on every Ghazvini/TLG strip mall are a clear sign- More tax $$ for themselves, always always “growing” Tallahassee when northeast roads are too congested already!

    The cops union wants to increase my tax burden for their own nest which doesn;’t actually help crime. what we need is less spending!!

  2. I think it is pretty crappy that the TEAM Leon application portal closed 24 hours after it opened because it had too many applications. What did they think was going to happen?? Did they even Look at how many areas of Leon County were devastated after the tornadoes?? There are A lot more people who still need that help.

  3. I’m confused. There were a lot of people that were without power after the tornadoes went through the area and somehow the local government is recommending that they get a month free for their troubles?

    Insanity….
