Local Businessman to Challenge Allison Tant in House Race

Republican Spencer Brass, a Tallahassee real estate investor, qualified to run for Florida House District 9 on Thursday, a seat currently held by Democrat state Rep. Allison Tant.

Tant, who was first elected in 2020, was unopposed in 2022 after redistricting made the seat more favorable to Republicans. The majority of voters in House District 9 reside in Leon county which includes all of Madison County and parts Jefferson County.

Brass, 26, has an interest in the West Pensacola Street area and has recently spoke at local government meeting advocating for the creation of a “West End District” sense of place designation for the area.

Brass, who is from Pasco County has lived in Tallahassee for three years, attended Columbia University and Dartmouth College.

Brass told TR that “he will be a leader that will focus on issues that will resonate with the majority of the people of Tallahassee.”

Tant, a former chair of the Florida Democratic Party, often touts her bipartisan efforts to help her constituents.

In a recent appearance on The Steve Stewart Show, when asked how she deals with the politically charged environment, Tant said she focuses on the work and the humanity of the other people she works with even when she disagrees with them, stating, “Let’s focus on the things we can do together and understand that there are going to be things that we can’t agree on, but that doesn’t mean we need to impugn your character or argue, fuss and fight.”

  1. Problem here is that many Republicans who live in Tallahassee know and like Mrs Tant. This young man may be awesome some day, but its a Dem area and Tant is without question the best Democrat we could have. If only our local Democrats would adopt her pro business, anti tax agenda the City would be far better served. And no, her husband is worth a pile of money – she isnt getting rich off this. She has plenty of resources.

As someone with a disabled child in my extended family, I also very much appreciate her powerhousing through Independence Landing.

  2. Kid is a little light in the experience department. Too Republican in every race creates more backlash in this progressive part of FL. Look at all the insiders pushing Welch over Montilla. Long game.

  3. 26 years old……..

    COLUMBIA UNIVERSTY….

No thanks.. I got work boots older than this kid. More useful too.

  4. @ NewPersonology… Your ignorance and hate are showing strong today. Lay off the weed and CNN… you’ll thank me later.

I happen to know Mr. Brass. He’s a good man and will make a great Rep for our District. Tant’s time is up. She’s made a good living off the taxpayer’s dime, but that’s about it. Time for some fresh perspective and focused representation for District 9.

  5. Rich Ivy Republican developer hurts us vs the progressive element.

Walking right into all the stereotypes. Allison is very popular in the rural areas and will win. Maybe even Simon could lose and then where are we.
