A new Florida law with a major impact on unhoused people — and their communities — takes effect today (Tuesday, Oct. 1). Tallahassee’s emergency homeless shelter, the Kearney Center, is staffing up.

Ahead of the November election that will decide control of the Tallahassee City Commission, City Commissioner Jeremy Matlow’s One Tallahassee Political Action Committee (PAC) – which he once described as people driven – received a total of $95,000 in contributions from three donors located in California and Tennessee.

FLORIDA NEWS

Four busy Florida ports will see direct impacts from an International Longshoremen’s Association strike for higher wages that began Tuesday.

Consumer sentiment in Florida increased for the fourth consecutive month in September, signaling growing optimism about the national economy, according to the latest report from the University of Florida’s Bureau of Economic and Business Research.

Sen. JD Vance (R) and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) faced off last night for the first and only planned vice-presidential debate of the 2024 election season. The debate—moderated by CBS’ Norah O’Donnell and Margaret Brennan—featured exchanges on issues including immigration, abortion, childcare, gun violence, and the economy. 

Iran launched around 180 ballistic missiles into Israel yesterday, killing one West Bank Palestinian and wounding two Israelis, in what Iran called retaliation for assassinations of leaders of allied proxy groups Hezbollah and Hamas. Israel’s defense system, supported by the US Navy, intercepted most missiles. See videos here.

  1. They aren’t “unhoused people.” They’re homeless.

    Do you remember what they were called before the word homeless came into common use? Bums, vagrants, hobos, etc. None of it was good. Homeless was passionless and descriptive.

    This “unhoused” nonsense is just pointlessly renaming an issue instead of working to resolve it.

  2. I’m almost glad to see Iran open the door to Israeli retaliation.

    If they so choose, Israel is capable of making Iran the “former state”.
