As of October 1, 2024, the year-to-date numbers indicate that the total number of crime incidents reported by the Tallahassee Police Department are down 7.9% when compared to the same period in 2023.

TR’s last report indicated the total number of crime incidents was down 6.5% year-to-date (YTD).

Property crimes encompass burglaries, thefts, and incidents of vandalism. Violent incidents include aggravated assaults, armed robberies, and physical altercations.

A look at specific crimes (see table below) reveals that the 7.9% decrease in property crime is being driven by a 2.5% decrease in auto related incidents and a 10.0% decrease in commercial burglaries.

The YTD violent crime data shows that robbery incidents were down 20.0%, while assault & battery incidents were down 15.8%.

The Four-Week Trend

However, over the last four weeks there has been an increase in property crimes led by a 28.9% increase in auto burglaries and thefts. On Thursday, September 18th, TPD reported 24 auto burglary incidents and two auto thefts.

Fatal Shootings

During the period, there have been 19 fatal shootings in 2024, compared to 19 fatal shooting deaths in 2023. In 2023, the year ended with a total of 24 fatal shootings.

TR will continue to provide an update to the crime incident report.

  1. Steve spends way too much time trying to convince us that things aren’t as bad as we think. Yesterday he sounded like Kamala Harris trying to convince us how good Bidenomics is for everyone, with his crime is down schtick. I had to stop listening…

It’s NOT down, so stop telling us it is!

  2. I’ve been tracking just a rough number since Jan 1. I’ve got 97 shootings/murders/stabbings so far for this year. These have just been the ones that have made the news (publicly released)

However, I believe this number is low. For example, there has been shootings and even deaths that have all appeared on the TOPs system that have never been released. In addition, there have been a few times when the system was down. One instance was when multiple organizations were noted at a crime scene (via social media) but it never showed up on TOPs or was reported in the media.

In addition, the media isn’t even talking about the other issues… just in the last 24 hours, a sexual battery at Tom Brown Park and a kidnapping at another City park.

Think there is a lot more going on, and don’t really believe that crime is getting better. It’s just being reported less, because we are in election season.
