The latest job report shows that Leon County gained 3,167 jobs in September when compared to August. There were 159,470 people working in Leon County in September compared to August’s revised employment number of 156,303.
The September unemployment rate came in at 3.5%, down from the 3.9% reported last month. One year ago, the September 2023 unemployment rate was 3.2%.
There were 165,206 people in the workforce in September, down from 162,594 in August.
Year Over Year Comparisons
The Leon County Jobs Report, provided below, shows the number of people working in September 2024 was 365 more than in September 2023. The September labor force – those looking for jobs – came in at 165,206 which was 879 more than the number reported one year ago.
The chart below shows the monthly level of jobs in Leon County over the last 37 months with a 12-month average trend line. The highlighted numbers relate to employment levels for the month of September back to 2021.
Comparing one month’s data to that same month a year ago is totally meaningless. Too many variable conditions occur year-to-year and month-to-month.
If you want to know if something is increasing or decreasing you have to look at TRENDS, usually calculated and plotted as moving averages to be statistically sound and meaningful. Those averages should be calculated for a reasonable time-span like perhaps a 3 or 4 month moving average; not a long time-span like one year as this article shows.
I’m not sure if the TR Staff understands these statistical concepts based on their repeated articles that show monthly year-to-year meaningless data on housing and crime.
So, if Amazon added 2,000 jobs in the past year what else is happening in the market place negatively to only have a 365 net effect? That is, what segments of the market have reduced by at least 1,635? The Jobs Report should show that TR
