LOCAL NEWS

The Killearn Homeowners Association (KHA) has initiated a project to clean out the vegetation that has grown in Lake Killarney over the last few years. KHA President Steve Givens told TR that the KHA Board voted unanimously to move forward with a capital project that will cost approximately $86,000 and will be paid for over a three-year period.

Leon County recently celebrated the opening of the new Buck Lake Trailhead at St. Marks Headwaters Greenway located at 10995 Buck Lake Road. The celebration featured a ceremonial ribbon cutting, introduced citizens to the exciting new amenities and adventures available at this additional entry location.

President Joe Biden commuted the sentences of roughly 1,500 prisoners and pardoned 39 nonviolent offenders yesterday, the largest single-day act of clemency by a US president since records began in 1900. The majority of those whose sentences were commuted were on home confinement since the pandemic. 

Twenty-nine-year-old Travis Timmerman was freed from a Syrian prison cell this week, one of at least two US citizens who went missing under the Assad regime. The US has asked leading rebel group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham for its help in locating journalist Austin Tice, who has been missing since 2012.

US stock markets close lower (S&P 500 -0.5%, Dow -0.5%, Nasdaq -0.7%), weighed down by better-than-expected inflation report a day earlier (More).

  1. The most effective and safest way to remove algae and vegetation from a freshwater lake is to add lime to the water. The Ph is changed and the green blocks the sun. Apply in Spring as days become longer. Contact any plantation manager and they will know the amounts to add per acre of water. It does not harm fish. Algae die with the lack of sunlight which returns slowly over a week or two.

  2. Carp might be an alternative at Lake Munson to rid it of acres of invasive plants; but, would still have concerns with the legacy toxic contaminants and Harmful Algal Blooms caused by phosphorous… need hydraulgy dredging!

  3. Introducing carp into Lake Killarney will get rid of the excess vegetation without introducing toxic chemicals or scraping the lake. A lot cheaper, too.
