On Jan. 14, Lincoln (11-6) played Florida High (9-9) in a non-conference girls basketball game at Florida High in Bob Albertson Gym. Both teams were ranked in the top three of the Leon County MaxPrep rankings with Lincoln ranked second and Florida High third. This is their second meeting of the regular season. The first matchup ended in a score of 58-36 favoring the Seminoles.
Since their first meeting, Lincoln has improved winning 9 out of their last 11 games. Although Florida High has not played their best basketball in the last month, they are coming off of a quality win against Buchholz on Jan. 11.
Florida High started the game off with multiple points off of fast break opportunities and control of both offensive and defensive rebounds. The Seminoles’ fast paced offense was led by point guard Christal Collins (Sr.). The Seminoles lead scorers included Makiyah McHenry (Jr.) with 17 points and Traniha Jackson (Sr.) with 10 points.
Although down for most of the first half, Lincoln continued to battle with several much-needed three-point baskets from lead scorer Jamiyah Brown (Jr.), who finished the game with 18 points. Other notable performances from the Lady Trojans included Keeli Duncan (Sr.) with 11 points and Kennedy Scott (So.) with 7 points.
After Lincoln regained the lead late in the third quarter, Florida High took it back with back-to-back scores to go up 32-29 heading into the 4th quarter. In the fourth, the Seminoles implemented a full court press that gave Lincoln trouble and forced multiple turnovers. Florida High sealed the win when Makiyah McHenry hit back-to-back 3-point baskets to increase the Seminoles’ lead to 9 points with 2:26 left in the game. Florida High won 43-38.
