Leon County Soccer Teams Compete in District Tournaments

With the regular season coming to a close, there are multiple teams from Leon County in the 1A, 2A, 3A and 4A classifications that are competing in their respected district tournaments. The Leon County schools taking part include, Maclay, Florida High (FSUHS), St. John Paul II (JPII), Community Christian (CCS), Rickards and Godby.

Boys

In the 1A classification, JPII and CCS were the only Leon County schools competing in the district 1 tournament. JPII (7-6-1) and CCS (8-4-1) both received byes as the 2nd and 3rd seed, respectively and ended up playing each other in the district semi-finals. As the lower seed, CCS upset JPII with a final score of 3-1 advancing to the finals where they will play the top seeded Rocky Bayou Christian (9-8) on Jan. 29.

According to MaxPreps, Maclay is currently the highest ranked (29th) Leon County team in the state. Maclay finished the regular season 15-1-2 and continued with this success in the 2A District 1 tournament. They received a bye in the first round and played their first match against Franklin County (5-10-5) in the semi-finals. The top seeded Marauders won in convincing fashion with a score of 7-0 advancing to the district finals against 2nd seeded Taylor County (10-7-3) on Jan. 30.

Florida High (10-3-3) is the only Leon County team competing in the 3A District 2 tournament among 5 total teams. The Seminoles defeated Rutherford (7-6-1) in the semi-finals, 5-2, and will face North Bay Haven Academy on Jan. 30 for the district championship.

There were two Leon County teams competing in the 4A district 1 tournament, Rickards (11-2) and Godby (6-5-2). Godby, seeded 6th lost to Wakulla (9-5-1) in the first round with a final score of 8-0 and Rickards, receiving a bye in the first round, lost to West Florida (12-4-3) in the semi-finals with a score of 3-0.

Girls

In the 1A District 1 tournament, JPII (9-7) is one of four teams competing and is seeded 2nd. In the first round the Panthers played the 3rd seeded Jefferson County Tigers (7-7) in the semi-finals and won with commanding fashion with a final score of 6-2. JPII is set to play the top seeded Rocky Bayou Christian (10-2-2) in the finals on Jan. 28.

In the 2A District 1 tournament, top seeded Maclay (9-3-2) received a bye for the first round and defeated the 4th seeded Mariana Bulldogs (8-10-1) in the semi-finals, 9-1. Maclay will face Port St. Joe in the district championship on Jan. 30.

In the 3A District 2 tournament, Florida High (10-3-3), seeded 1st, received a bye in the first round and defeated the 4th seeded Rutherford Rams (5-13) 6-0 in the semifinals. Florida High will play for the district championship against North Bay Haven Academy on Jan 30.

In the 4A District 1 tournament, Rickards (3-9-1) and Godby (3-8-2) both played matches in the first round with two other teams receiving byes. Godby lost by forfeit to Bay high school (6-9-1) on Jan. 24 in the quarterfinals. 6th seeded Rickards also had a first-round exit losing to the 3 seeded West Florida Jaguars (2-11-1) 6-0 on Jan. 24.
